2nd XI Hockey v Craigclowan
18th February
Won 4 – 2 Goals: Will Jack x 2, Jamie MacDonald x 2.
There were many positives about the 2nd XI’s first full game of the season. Firstly, the boys went behind and looked a little “off the pace” for the opening 10 minutes but, once they had acclimatised to the wide expanse Dunbar astro turf offers, some patterned hockey emerged. The period of Craigclowan pressure Belhaven had absorbed during which only one goal was conceded, was largely thanks to our captain Charlie who made some super saves.
Will Jack began to assert himself on the right, ably assisted by Lochy. This progress took the form of confident dribbling and well timed passing which stretched our opponents. This resulted in several effective forays into Craigclowan’s D which demanded some excellent saves from their goalkeeper who became the busier of the two.
Craigclowan did have chances, largely due to their ability to break quickly and dribble unabated until arriving near our D where Ali, William and Jake were on duty. The back three complemented each other splendidly with William and Jake proving to be effective stoppers and Ali, who had an outstanding game, sweeping up any Craigclowan attacks that penetrated the Jake/William wall.
Our halves worked hard and once Leo stopped ball chasing and held a more central position, the game was much more in our control. Edward Wauton also played a vital part in us securing the middle ground. This allowed the excellent Jamie MacDonald to push forward and it was from well timed support that he snatched his two cleverly taken goals.
Some back post work in practise the day before certainly paid off as Jamie slotted from that position.
All in all this was a very encouraging start and the whole team can be delighted with their performance.
They thoroughly deserved their victory and I hope that one or two of these boys go on to catch Peeky’s eye for first team selection. I don’t think we are going to hang on to Will for our next match!
Well done lads.
