U11 Girls' v st mary's

Belhaven 1 - St Mary's 3

 u11 hockey

A lovely sunny afternoon for a game of hockey today and the girls warmed up and got ready to play St Mary’s. With a rearranged team, now including U10 players due to some of the U11 running in the cross country, the girls took to positions ready to start.

The first minutes of the game and the play was even with both teams gaining and keeping possession of the ball, dribbling towards their circles and aiming at the goal. St Mary’s scored first and minutes later, Amelia scored for Belhaven. Jeanie was up in the circle the whole time with Annabel there backing up the attack. Mairi was a superb link mid field while Julia and Rosie tried very hard to tackle the opposition. It was not long before St Mary’s scored again and despite great efforts from Mercedes and Matilda the ball crept past them and into the goal. By half time St Mary’s were leading 2 – 1.

As the second half began, Sophie was kept busy defending her goal and made some super saves. The defence tried much harder to keep the ball away and Mairi made great tackles and kept possession of the ball making good ground up the field towards the goal where Jeanie and Amelia were ready to aim for goal. A few attempts missing each time were soon cleared by the St Mary’s defence. A final goal in the last minutes of the game and St Mary’s won 3 – 1.

A great effort girls despite not being a full team, you all played really hard. The U10 girls improved during the game as this was only their second match of the term. Knowledge of positioning will help you girls in future matches especially being ready for the opposition taking a free hit. The U11 girls, you all played very hard, showing great sportsmanship during the game. Now you need to make sure you follow the ball rather than watch where it goes and if you lose the ball – make sure you win it back.

Man of the match – Mairi Donaldson, great all round play, the best match you’ve played so far – well done!
