U11 v Cargilfield (A)

For the second last match of the season, the U11 team set off to Peffermill in Edinburgh to play Cargilfield, a team we knew to be a good one. There wasn’t a chance to warm up much before the match as the pitch was being used, but there was the chance to watch some very good ladies playing – Edinburgh University versus Liverpool University (Edinburgh won).

Right from the push-back, we were under pressure with Cargilfield surging towards our D. That attack was seen off but there were many more to come. Cargilfield spent most of the half in our part of the field and had a number of forays into our D. It was grim stuff but the defenders worked tirelessly to keep them out. Attack after attack was halted and the ball cleared out.

It was on one of these clearances that we managed to make a break and ended up with a three-on-two situation with Kit, Hewie and Will all involved. Unfortunately they managed to intercept the crucial pass and our main chance of the half went begging. Charlie and Angus had their best game together as centre halves today and it was this combination that stopped a lot of Cargilfield’s attacks. The half ended with no score and I must say that I was delighted.

U11 Defence
Unfortunately the duo I just mentioned found themselves out of position for about the only time, 20 seconds after the hit-off for the second half. This allowed Cargilfield to get behind us and they swept into the D. The attack was stopped but the resulting penalty corner was not. The ball was hit towards the goals; Ollie got some pad onto it but it carried on; Tom, who was in an excellent position as post man, all but stopped it but then it spun backwards and under his stick, just bobbling over the line. Goal. Gutted.

After that we did make a number of breaks and more of these were down the right. Geordie showed some skill in getting the ball forward and allowed Kit some runs. We even had a shot or two at their goals but couldn’t get it in the back of the net. Cargilfield kept attacking. Jamie made numerous tackles and read the game well, getting into position early and he managed to intercept a number of hits. Hewie and Will put a lot of pressure on the free hits and William made some good tackles when he needed to. Tom and Archie did a grand job at the back and Tom in particular started to show some composure
as a defender.

It was a cracking match and it was only the tremendous commitment shown by each and every Belhaven boy that kept us in the game to the final whistle. Well done boys, you can be proud of this performance. There is one match remaining and if you play like this again, then I am certain that we can end the season with a victory.

M.O.T.M. – A tough one with everyone working so hard but I think it can shared by Geordie and Jamie
