2ndXI Hockey
V Fettes 9/3/09
Lost 1-0
This was the team’s first full fixture for a number of weeks and the boys looked a bit match rusty. Once the game got up to match pace Freddy and Casper started to see more of the ball and the distribution improved. Tom Stodart was our most threatening attacker and he started to play the by line more effectively. In the oppositions D we lacked the intensity needed to be first to loose ball so a few chances went a begging.
Fettes were gifted a goal when, having been awarded a free hit outside our D one of our less switched on players attempted a clumsy pass to a team mate who was 1 metre away facing the opposite direction. Fettes scooped up the ball and slid it past the ever impressive Olivia Dobson who was deputizing for an exam committed Cloughy. Olivia was not at fault for the goal and can be very proud of her efforts throughout the game.
The goal gave us the required wake up and we started to play with more shape, purpose and direction. Foray after foray into the Fettes D did not pay dividends. We hit the post, missed open goals, miss fired when one on one and just could not get the equalizer we more than deserved.
This ended rather frustratingly in a defeat but lessons have undoubtedly been learned.
2nds Hockey (2x6-a-side) v. Cargilfield 11.03.09
Carg A 1 Belhaven B 2
Carg B 2 Belhaven A 1
Carg B 3 Belhaven B 0
Carg A 1 Belhaven A 1
This was a rather unusual fixture that included a couple of Cargilfield Dandylions hockey girls in what was expected to be a boys 2nd team squad hockey fixture. Our boys were somewhat surprised, especially as their female opposition proved to be a very significant factor in the proceedings. That said, we thoroughly enjoyed the fixture and probably learned a great deal from playing high intensity 15 minute matches on their mini astro turf square.
Once again Cloughy demonstrated what a major impact a goalkeeper can have on results by performing to an excellent standard throughout the afternoon. Our outfield hockey improved as we developed an eagerness to go to meet passes instead of expecting the ball to trickle to our feet. We distributed the ball better having established the pace of the surface and our running off the ball improved as the afternoon progressed.
This was a very worthwhile fixture and Cargilfield’s female “ringers” actually enhanced our boys’ opportunity to learn from a competitive project despite the disappointment of losing a couple of games.
