U11 v Loretto (H)

The U11 boys took advantage of the glorious weather to jog down to the Hallhill astroturf today for their final match of the season. By the time that we reached it, they were all complaining about the heat but that would not prove enough to prevent the team earning a good win against Loretto. We had faced Loretto twice before today’s fixture; once in a six-a-side match which we lost, and once in an eleven-a-side match which was a draw. All was set for a momentous final match.

The match got off to a rather slow start with neither team seeming keen to seize the advantage. We won some decent ball and tried to send it wide; unfortunately they managed to cut it out time and again due to the weak passes. It soon became obvious that they were very strong on one side of the field and whenever they sent it right, we found ourselves on the back foot. Kit did get the ball on the right wing once or twice and made some decent runs but was unable to get his crosses into the D. At one stage in the half, Hewie won the ball and surged forward all the way from the halfway line to their D, unfortunately no-one else managed to keep up with him and give him any support. The half ended with no score which was frustrating as I thought that we really should have taken control and scored a few goals.

Once again, a stern half-time talk seemed to do the trick and the boys showed a bit more urgency. Both teams had chances again in the second half but Belhaven seemed to have the ascendancy. This period of play showed how the boys have come on through the season. Free hit were more effective; the ball was switched from one side of the field to the other and we put the opposition hits under a lot of pressure and boys were strong on the ball and showed some composure.

Time and again we got the ball to the edge of their D – it was the final pass that didn’t seem to work and it was only in the 15th minute that Kit finally got onto the end of a pass and poked it towards the goal. It wasn’t the best shot I have ever seen but it was on target and that was all it needed to be as it passed their ‘keeper for the first goal of the match. The goal seemed to take the fight out of Loretto a bit and eventually the sustained pressure led to another success. The ball was switched from one side of the field to the other then smacked into the D. Harry (who made a cameo appearance) hit it towards goal and then Kit swooped in touched it past the ‘keeper for our second goal. And that was the end of the match, and the end of the season. It was a superb, and deserved, way to end what has been a good season. Well done boys.

Belhaven Hill     2    -   0   Loretto

M.O.T.M. Kit for his two goals and Charlie, who despite only touching the ball a couple of times, stuck to his man and his position.
