Third Place play off

A lovely spring morning, and this group of girls gathered excitedly to go to Haddington to play in the Compass Hockey Tournament. Their first match was against George Watson’s and the girls played very hard as a team. A tough game but very evenly matched. Sophie was kept busy defending her goal, whilst Jeanie and Moo tried hard to score in their attacking goals. Although the match ended in a draw, every girl on the team showed their skills in this fast moving game.
Their next match, against Compass, was not one of the best matches they have ever played. Going in to the match with too much confidence, the girls let Compass take advantage of this and take possession of the ball. A little more talking on the pitch and awareness for the opposition and the final result might have been a little different.
Their next match was against Clifton Hall. Again the girls tried hard to collect the ball, dribbling along the pitch and finding spaces to pass the ball. Clifton Hall made it difficult for our attackers as they had every team member in their defending circle, making it very crowded for Mairi, Abigail, Jeanie and Moo to find the goal. Grizel was outside the circle, scooping up the loose balls and feeding them back into the circle. Another no scoring draw and the girls found themselves in the third place play offs only to play Clifton Hall again.

This time, the girls had warmed up and played a different game of hockey. Working together with more awareness for every one else on the pitch, they dribbled the ball and passed accurately between players. Rosabel’s free hits were fantastic and she made up a lot of ground on the pitch. Sophie WM cleared away any balls that came near the defending circle and Sophie Benson had a couple of great saves in goal. Annabel proved to be a great link in the mid – field too. Some goals were finally scored by Jeanie and Amelia in this game, taking them into the lead.
The tournament was eventually won by George Watson’s.
Well done girls – some good games to end off the season. A shame you did not play with the same determination in every match as you did in the first and last matches!
You have been a great team this term, you have improved upon skills and your knowledge of the game. A little more work is needed for you to be successful next year, dribbling with the ball and being a little more confident. I’m sure you will though, you are an enthusiastic group.
Players of the tournament – Rosabel Kilgour and Grizel Hocknell
Most improved player – Abigail Pooley
