U9 v Loretto

U9 Cricket v Loretto
The rules: Everybody bats and everybody bowls. Each pair faces 2 overs and bowls 2. The teams start with a total of 100 runs. A wicket costs 5 runs.

We batted first. Ross and Rex soon settled in, so much so that Rex hit a mighty 6! Ross managed a 4 and a 1 not to be outdone and by the end of their overs, our first pair had scored 16 good runs.                        Team total:116
Alex  and Jack were next and batted somewhat less confidently though Jack hit a good 4 but Alex lost his wicket for a net score of 0!      Team total 116
So Mungo and Murray were next. Again after some hesitancy, they dared take the odd single but lost a wicket along the way and Mungo had to hit a 4 to bring their total to 2!                                                               Team Total:118
Freddy and Angus were now at the crease and started with a couple of singles before loosing a wicket which was partly redeemed by Freddy’s 4 to make a total of 2.                                                                   Team Total: 120
On went Seb and Donald whosoon made things more interesting by scoring a few singles and... losing 3 wickets between them! scoring -11!
                                                                                                Team Total 109
Duncan and Jock S settled the nerves by looking very competent and eager to get things right and despite losing a silly wicket, they pushed the score on by another 8 runs.                                                                       Team Total: 117
So we were down to our last pair and looking for more runs. Up stepped George who set about the bowlers with venom and scored four 4s and a single, not giving Jock a chance to get in on the act, for a score of 18.                                                                                    Final Team Total: 135

Would that be enough wondered the coach....

When bowling, we found it quite difficult to bowl accurately enough to take more than a couple of wickets though we restricted their early batsmen to a mere 5 runs. Then came two strong pairs who pushed the total to 136!
So it came down to the last pair with Ross and Rex bowling and us badly needing a wicket to have a chance of winning... Rex’s over yielded 3 runs for the opposition. Now we were getting desperate. On came Ross who bowled three good balls for no score and got a wicket on the fourth! There was still time for Loretto to get in a bit of a mix up and not manage to score what looked like their winning run before the final ball was spent.
                                                                                  Loretto’s Final Total: 134

Phew! that was close, thought the coach...
