U12 Rounders v Loretto

Belhaven 12 - Loretto 5

Having left Belhaven in the beautiful blue skies, we arrived in Musselburgh to play rounders on a rather more gloomy and damp pitch. Saskia won the toss, and wisely chose to field first.
Playing rather safe, the Loretto batters started off. Making it only to first post each time, their hits were being fielded brilliantly by the Belhaven team. A little slow maybe at first to get enthused for the game in the cold, a few of the deep fielders, I think, wished they could settle down with a hot chocolate instead! They soon, however, got into the game after a few balls. Rose was kept busy in third deep and likewise Tora and Bea fielded the ball well when it came near them, stumping out players at third and fourth post. Any batters who missed the balls, had to run hard to make it to first post before Olivia and Iona got them out. By the end of the first innings, Loretto had managed to score 1 ½ rounders.

With quite a low score to aim for, Belhaven too played it safe. Rose was the first to score from a great hit, followed by a rather risky rounder, from a good bat from Tosca. Half rounders again from Bea, taking a tumble on the wet ground did not stop her from persevering each time to score at least half a rounder.  Further scores from Alny, Saskia, Iona and Tora took the score to a great lead by half time – 6 ½ rounders.

The Loretto batters began their second innings, playing safe and despite some great hits from the team, they stayed at first post. Some half rounders soon boosted their score but Olivia and Iona were a great pair, getting out non hitters at first post. Rose did some excellent bowling, quick too, to see opportunities to get players out. A great catch from Tora, too, and the Loretto girls finished their second innings having scored a further 2 ½ rounders.

Not quite as good a start to the second innings saw Tora stumped out at fourth post from an excellent hit and Rose did not quite make it fast enough to second post. Bea’s steady hits to third deep, and a few risky runs from Saskia produced more half-rounders for the team and added to their score. A further 5 ½ rounders this innings and the team had their second victory of the term.

Well done girls – despite playing in some awful weather, you showed some good skills, catching the ball well, even though it was slippy and wet. Let’s hope the sun shines down for our next match.

Man of the match – Tosca in the first innings and Bea in the second innings.
