1st XI v Fettes

Goodness. Today’s rather damp match against Fettes, here at Belhaven Hill resulted in a second convincing win for the Belhaven Hill 1st XI.

Fettes (sans one of their key players) won the toss and elected to bat first in this limited overs (30) match. Tom G. opened the bowling for us and got us off to a cracking start by bowling a wicket maiden. Will’s first over was also eventful with two run out chances missed. There were a number of other chances missed in this first spell and after eight overs they were on 23 for 1.

Tom D. and Freddy took over the bowling duties. Fred struggled to find his length in his first over but some decent fielding by Peter meant that Fettes lost their second wicket. With 2 wickets down for only 24 runs, we seemed to be in a good position. Only five runs later, Dougal showed what a fine fielder he is by running someone out with direct hit. After this Fettes rallied a bit and hit a number of boundaries. This spell was broken by another piece of good fielding by Dougal, and another run out.

Suddenly wickets started tumbling and four fell in three overs – two each to Tom D. and Freddy.

Tom G. returned to the attack and was joined by Cappy. Both boys bowled well but with no reward. It was only when Tom D. came back on that the final two wickets fell – both in one over, leaving Tom D. with four wickets in the innings and Fettes with 93 runs on the board.

I was confident that we could pass the target set by Fettes. As long as we didn’t all go out, we only had to score at three runs an over. Tom G. and Tom D. once again got the innings off to an excellent start, and Tom D. in particular scored fairly freely. With ten overs bowled, the boys were well on track, having scored 41 runs. Then suddenly, some indecision and a poor call led to Tom G. being run out. As so often happens, he was soon followed by Tom D. who was out bowled. This meant that we had two new batsmen at the crease, and it was a crucial time. Both Lochy and George coped well, and they kept the score ticking over. Lochy was caught in the 17th over which brought Will to the crease.

After hammering Mr. Harvey for a few boundaries in practice yesterday, Will thought it a good idea to swing wildly at his first delivery – it wasn’t, and he was fortunate not to be trudging back to the pavilion. After this, he took a few balls to get his eye in while George continued to play sensibly and score freely. Eventually Will cut loose and hammered a ball to the boundary. This was followed by a few more, one of them without bouncing. This flurry, combined with George’s more controlled shots, brought Belhaven’s score very close to that of Fettes. Unfortunately Will failed to heed last weeks’ advice (do not run on a dropped catch), tried to run on a dropped catch and was run out.

Stods (who had had a tidy game as ‘keeper) came in for long enough to claim one run and George polished off the innings with a fine boundary.

This was another convincing victory for the Belhaven Hill 1st XI. The bowling was solid and the batting good. I was a bit disappointed with some of the fielding ( with three missed catches, four missed run outs and one missed stumping, I was reminded of the West Indies) but there were also some moments of excellence. Once again, just about everyone contributed to this victory, even those who didn’t get a chance to bat or bowl and that is an important element of a good team. Well done boys.
