THE WRIGHT STUFF AGAIN AS TILLSIDE ARE TURNED OVER

The sunshine lingered, the shadows lengthened and the inviting smell of the barbecue drifted across the beautiful village cricket ground as the Belhaven under eleven team basked in the glory of a hard-fought but nonetheless deserved victory.

Not that it had been a straightforward, nor a crushing victory. Far from it. Batting first on a beautiful ground, Ollie and Jamie Farr opened up with a very good partnership before both retired, and by the time Kit Gordon Cumming and Charlie Riley fell the score was already a very healthy 74 from just 10 overs, which became 84 for 2 from 12.

The good start had meant that others batting lower down the order were given an opportunity to ‘express themselves’ (we don’t like to say slog) freely, and Tom Wright did just that, hitting the ball cleanly over mid wicket three times in quick succession. Angus Harley was playing rather straighter at the other end, but such is his rapid development as a batsman that he looked supreme as he drove the Tillside opening bowler for four through mid off and then hooked him for six over square leg. This end of innings acceleration was just what was required, and though wickets inevitably fell in the chase for runs Harry Clough, Charlie Riley and the others all contributed to a fine score of 134 for 8 from our 20 overs.

Tillside began very brightly, with an obviously talented opening partnership, and one of the opening batsmen, in particular,

was making our seemingly large score seem not quite so unattainable early on. Geordie Younger broke the deadlock, and from then on Wills Younger, in particular, with valuable support from Tom Wright, Harry Clough, Angus Harley, Will Plowden and Geordie Younger kept the wickets coming steadily. Eventually Tillside were bowled out for a very respectable 76.

An enormous thank you to Lord and Lady Joicey for their wonderful hospitality, and to Steve, Colin and the Tillside players for a memorable afternoon's cricket and entertainment.
