1st Netball v CArgilfield

Belhaven 1 - Cargilfield 17

This was one of those matches where all the girls played as hard as they could but they were overcome by the height of their opposition. Unfortunately, Netball is one of the few games where height makes all the difference. With our shooters being marked by two rather tall girls, Rose and Olivia found it very hard to take a chance and shoot. Our defence worked hard, Saskia and Tosca both determined to intercept the ball. The second quarter started and play began to equal out a little. With the Belhaven girls still lacking the height, Mairi stepped in to play Goal Shoot and with her added height, she had a few more attempts at goal and finally it paid off – Belhaven had scored their first goal. With cheers amongst the team, Belhaven were determined to keep playing as best they could.

A half time score, where Cargilfield were in the lead by 11 goals, the girls took to playing the second half of game with more bounce passes. These worked well, as the team alternated their passes in an attempt to confuse the opposition. Bea was always in a space for the ball and was a great link for Tosca and Hattie. Iona worked hard in attack feeding the balls to Mairi and Olivia, aiming for goal. Hermione too, was there, intercepting passes and using great bounce passes along the wing. During this second half the Belhaven girls worked harder and managed to stop the opposition from scoring – Cargilfield only scored a further 5 goals in the last 20 mins.

This final score does not reflect how hard the girls played – some basic errors as they were forced into speeding up the game but with a little bit of work on passing and spacing they should be able to know where and to whom they are passing.

A great effort girls – you never gave up and played so hard throughout the game.

Man of the match (for the half she played) – Bea Begg for being in a space all the time and intercepting the ball from the rather tall opposition.

Most Improved player - Mairi for showing determination and using her skills to intercept high balls.
