1ST GIRLS HOCKEY V CARGILFIELD

BELHAVEN  - 2                           CARGILFIELD - 3
                         Tosca Tindall
                       Rose Greville Williams

The snow has gone, the chill in the air certainly has not, but the new hockey season is well and truly under way, and this was a great match to set pulses racing. Real end to end stuff, it certainly could have gone either way, and as is so often the case, the result was decided by a mixture of clinical finishing and the run of the ball with the two teams very evenly matched.

Cargilfield certainly had their stars, there is no denying that, but early on we coped well with the pressure exerted on us. Saskia Weir and Sophie Walker Munro held firm at the back, while Rose Greville Williams and Iona Brooks set up some good attacking moves. Although Cargilfield scored, the end-to-end nature of the game did not relent, and the ball was moving rapidly, through quick interchanges of passing from one end to the other. Hermione Campbell was being kept busy in goal, while Rosabel Kilgour and Jeanie Gibbs were making a nuisance of themselves darting in and out of the Cargilfield players. Hattie Harley made several excellent runs down the right wing to set up chances but the final shots were just not hitting the target.

On the break, Belhaven seized their opportunity. The ball ran loose towards the D and was pounced upon, after a very determined run, by Tosca Tindall. She headed goalwards, kept her balance and slotted the ball past the Cargilfield goalkeeper. Game on.

With the game so open, opportunities were being presented at both ends and it was only a matter of time before one would be taken. And sure enough, Cargilfield did take one to take the lead. But with the Belhaven crowd warmed up and in good voice, the girls struck again. With a determined run into the circle, Amelia Cookson won a short corner, which was very well worked and saw Rose Greville Williams rifle a ferocious shot into the bottom left hand corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance whatsoever.
2-2 and all to play for once again.

It seemed unlikely that the game would end 2-2. It just did not feel like that sort of game. It had been too competitive, too hard-fought, there had been moments of drama and those watching (and umpiring) were clearly becoming more tense as time pressed on. Both teams had chances before Cargilfield took a long corner, pushed forward and swept the ball past Hermione into the corner to win the match.

This was an excellent game, and though it is never easy to lose, girls you should be pleased that you could put in that high standard of performance so early in the term.
