Longridge Towers School U11 Cross Country
Thursday 4/2/10

Two teams of U11 pupils, 6 girls and 7 boys, took part in this event on a bright, sunny afternoon down in the Borders.

Twelve schools had entered teams for the girls’ race and about 90 runners lined up at the start. After a quarter of a mile or so of open-field running which saw Emilia moving into an early lead, followed by the other Belhaven runners settling in the top dozen places, all the competitors disappeared into the woods (such is the glorious uncertainty of X-Country running)…to re-emerge some time later with Emilia still in first place, having overtaken the ‘hare’ and Rosie chasing hard to finish 3rd. Not far behind, the other four girls ran a very strong, tight team race, finishing as follows: Jemima 6th, Cassia 8th, Zinia 11th and Miranda13th, all of which gave us a total of 42points, easily gaining 1st place in the team competition , the school in second place having scored 118 points. So we retain the shield yet again. Well done Girls!

For the second race of the afternoon, 11teams, about 80 runners, lined up for the start of the boys’ event. The boys were quietly confident but who knows, a muddy patch here and a lost shoe there could make all the difference!

Again, the first half-mile was run at breakneck speed and stretched out the field, Jamie setting a scorching pace from the off, followed by George and Angus  who seemed comfortable in about 12th place, Hughie, Jock,

Freddie and Christian not too far behind: all of our contingent making very good progress at that stage.

Off they went into the woods…and when the leaders re-appeared, things were looking very good indeed: Jamie was so far in the lead that he too overtook the ‘hare’ and finished strongly to win; George ran hard to claim 2nd, followed by Angus in 10th. We then had a little gap before Jock in 22nd a short way ahead of Hughie in 26th, and Freddie in 34th, Christian bringing up the rear in 36th.

Once again, the first 6 runners’ positions were added up and we had scored 85 points…Would that be enough to retain the shield?
Yes, as it turned out, as the next team could only manage 102. The shield was coming home with us! Well done boys!

All in all, it was a tremendous afternoon’s running, everyone doing their very best on the day. So, very well done to all the runners involved.
