2nd XI Hockey v Cargilfield
10th March 2010

Won 4-0
Goals; Edward Wauton (hatrick), Rupert Warre

Our final game of the season was a fantastic climax to a wonderful season, nay a MAGNIFICENT season.

From the start the team set about their opponents as if they had been offered some massive incentive to win…such as a MacDonald’s or something! I had said earlier in the season that if we had an unbeaten season we would go to MacDonald’s. I meant a trip to our captain Jamie’s house for a meal, not the junk food chain!!

This was our best performance of the season. When not in possession our halves set about Cargilfield like terriers after rats. This feverish desire rattled our opponents who had some capable hockey players.

When in possession, lessons learned about patterns of attack were utilised to the full by this very able team. Passing wide, particularly to the brilliant Will Plowden, created chance after chance and the vastly improved Edward Wauton, who has become the “Wayne Rooney” of Belhaven Hill (in scoring prowess not weight), benefited from such incisive play. Alongside Edward played Rupert who has gained in confidence and took his goal extremely well by demonstrating a level of persistence that he must carry forward to next hockey season.

On the other wing Charlie Riley also caused the Cargilfield defence problems but his best contribution came from his defensive duties when our opponents tried to attack down his wing.

Any successful penetration of our halves was soon dealt with as ever by the multi talented back four. In the space between midfield and defence Tom AW was an excellent guard and his distribution improved as the match progressed. Behind Tom was the “three amigos” In Antonio we have a maniacal ball hunter who covers huge distances to harass any attacker who has the audacity to approach our D. In William we have an impassable rock who refused to let Cloughy make any saves. William had his best game of the season. And to complement these two we had our wise captain Jamie. He proved a combination of both Antonio and William and cleverly judged when to intervene and when to be economical with his involvement.

Every position on the field was covered by boys who were good at playing there. Our two central players also proved an excellent combination. In Tom Wright we have an able stick player who gets stuck in and always tries to play the right kind of pass. Tom improves every time he plays a match and he will be vital to Peeky next year. So too will be our strongest player on the day, Angus. His improvement these past two or three games has been remarkable. Angus’ worked rate is phenomenal and his ever increasing skills and understanding of the game has been a major factor in the success of this team. Part of me thinks he is more at home in the second team but he really should have had some first team experience on the back of his recent progress.

Even our replacements – Wills, Kit and Archie played their part in this win. All got stuck in the moment they took to the field and I would have been delighted if Archie’s well struck shot had beaten their able keeper.

All in all this has been a most pleasing season. A great bunch of lads, all with different strengths and weaknesses combined to make a very strong second team squad indeed. In fact the best I have coached in my nine years at Belhaven.

Well done to you all. I shall ask Mrs Harvey to collect one “Happy Meal” to share out amongst you and Cloughy, our masked hero in the goal can have the toy for being so patient and not complaining about having very little to do all season!

Well done lads, you have all been utterly superb.

A note from Mrs H.

Since its Mrs H who puts Mr H's match reports on the web - she says he should honour his promise!  A 'Happy Meal' for everyone!!
