1st XI v Edinburgh Academy

The Belhaven Hill 1st XI enjoyed two convincing wins against The Edinburgh Academy on Saturday, here at Belhaven Hill.

The Academy won the toss and chose to bat in this limited, 25 over match. They scored their first run off the first ball by stealing a run to Geordie at square leg, who should have been saving the single. He made up for this mistake two balls later when they tried it again and he hit the stumps from square on to run out their opener. The Academy never quite recovered from this early setback.

It was another piece of excellent fielding that cost EA their second wicket: their no. 3 sliced one of Fred’s balls (!) past Dougal at point – not quite past him as he leapt to his left at took a good catch. Dougal himself then took two wickets a couple of overs later by bowling out their no. 4 and then having their no. 2 caught at mid on. And what a catch it was. This boy could hit the ball and had hammered a couple of fours. He mistimed on and Douglas launched himself at it, taking a fantastic, and very important, catch.

After that, they had little to offer and some accurate bowling ensured that the remaining wickets fell quickly. Dougal and Fred took one each in their final overs; Cappy opened his spell with a wicket maiden (Have I been proven wrong yet?); GIK did even better in his first over, taking two wickets in the first two balls, and then Cappy took two more in his next over to finish them off for a toatal of 33 runs.

Easy then.

Hmm.

Stods started well again but then tried to play across the line to a full, straight delivery so was trapped LBW. GIK prodded at one off the back foot that popped up a bit and was caught. Fred was bowled. Ollie lofted one gently to mid off who ignored it. EA obliged by bowling many wides and then Oliie got stuck in and hammered the ball to the boundary while Douglas did what he needed to do and stayed in. He even moved his feet.

In the end, it was all over almost before it began and Belhaven Hill won the match by 7 wickets and went in for tea feeling very satisfied. The parents, despite the win and very good sandwiches, were less satisfied, as they were enjoying the sun (some of them even enjoyed the cricket) and Mr Stodart was fearful that he would in fact make it home in time for his daughter’s birthday party. When all the EA parents agreed that they could stay a bit longer, it was decided to play a second match; this one limited to 12 overs per team, and intended to give those who didn’t bat or bowl previously a chance to do so.

EA batted first. Henry bamboozled them and took one wicket. Douglas took another, as did Ollie and Will (all bowled). EA meanwhile, scored at a good rate with their star batsman hitting some big shots (and some entertaining ones). They ended their allotted overs on 63 for 4 (5.25 an over).

George C. And Geordie Y opened the batting for us and soon got stuck in. The boundaries can regularly and George in particular was very good between the stumps, calling loudly and running at every opportunity. After 8 overs we had 60 runs and so George and Geordie retired, giving Will and Henry a chance. The remaining runs came in wides and byes and the match was effectively won by 10 wickets.

There was some very good batting, but I would still like to see some of you trying to be more belligerent when batting. This was a very good display in the field with some fantastic catches and accurate bowling. Well done boys, these are two very impressive victories.
