Runners up in their pool

Having won the toss for their first game of the tournament, the girls began fielding. Aberlour took Belhaven by surprise as they had some strong hitters. As we settled into the game, the girls stopped whole rounders from being scored, only allowing the opposition to aim for half rounders. Some great fielding between backstop and first post along with two great catches from Rose, saw Aberlour finish having scored an impressive 5 rounders in 8 minutes.
The batting started off well with a great rounder from Saskia and a half from Mairi and Tosca. Unfortunately, Ollie and Iona were stumped out at first post and two great hits from Mairi and Olivia D were caught. Bea and Rose were hitting well and with a rounder too from Hattie and Tosca, it saw our score creep slowly up to 8 rounders by the end of the match.
Our next match against Fettes was incredibly tight. The girls were tense and knew their fielding had to remain tight, not watching the balls roll past them. Fettes had some strong batters, who kept our deep fielders busy, especially Ollie, but there were also some great catches this game from Iona, Hattie, Olivia D and Bea. With the fielding becoming more secure, Belhaven limited Fettes to scoring half rounders. By the end of the game Fettes had scored 6 ½ rounders.
The Belhaven girls began batting with Rose, Mairi and Olivia scoring from their hits. Playing safe, the Fettes fielding was tight, which made it difficult for us to score. As the time went on, great hits from Tosca and Mairi scored rounders, whilst it was the half rounders from Jeanie, Bea and Saskia that boosted our scores. Anxiously waiting for the final score to be announced, Belhaven had secured another narrow victory – winning by just a ½ rounder.
The next match was against Kilgraston. Having watched them already win two of their games, we knew it would be tough. We began this innings fielding and the girls had to keep it tight. There were some strong batters on the team and Jeanie fielded brilliantly. The first four batters all scored straight away – which worried our team slightly. However they rose to the challenge as always and improved their fielding. Keeping down the scores, Kilgraston finished the innings having scored 8 ½ rounders.
A tough total for our girls to reach but my, didn’t they try hard. All batting their hardest, they scored half rounders. A great hit by Olivia D was unfortunately caught, but other great hits from Rose and Saskia, caught their fielders unready, and both girls scored. An incredibly tense eight minutes saw us finish two rounders short this game.
Our last match in the pool was against St Mary’s. Our fielding was a little slack in places and the St Mary’s girls took advantage of this and began scoring. Needing to tighten up their catches and passing, they also needed to stop the St Mary’s girls from scoring. By the end of the innings, St Mary’s had set the target of 8 ½ rounders to beat.
Another high scoring total to chase, the girls gave it their best. Bea was unfortunately caught from her first bat, and likewise Olivia D, having already scored two great rounders was caught out on her third go. Again this was a match in which the half rounders were vital. With almost everyone scoring something this innings, it was another close game – in which the Belhaven girls won by 1 ½ rounders.
Not making the final, the girls watched the winners from each pool, play each other, in which Kilgraston won 9 rounders to Cargilfield's 5. Having finished second in their pool – we like to think we came joint third!
A great afternoon of rounders girls. Still some aspects of fielding to work on – but you all played really hard and can now see why the half rounders are important to gain when you are batting but also to stop when you are the fielding team.
A super effort today girls – I’m proud of you.
