The delightful, small pitch at Edinburgh Academy was host to a rather ignominious defeat for Belhaven. Although there was open-eyed surprise from some team members at the shortness of the boundary, not many batsmen exploited this and not enough runs were scored.
Academy’s bowlers were accurate, some pacey, but above all Belhaven’s batsmen did not make use of their feet and their bats flailed somewhat. Andrew Watson and Archie Rettie were steady enough but they did not time their shots particularly well and so there was not enough strength to lash the ball about!
There were boundaries from most batsmen who took their place at the crease, but opportunities arose for all of them to score more. The favourite 2nd XI shot was much in evidence today: viz. swipe round to leg and try to take the keeper’s head off - commonly called ‘kill the wicky shot’! Not one of these shots made contact!

The (in)famous ‘kill the wicky’ shot being perfectly demonstrated by a Belhaven batsman - I know who you are, despite trying to cover your face!
However, there were moments. Ali Johnston scoring two sixes during his innings of 34 not out and Leo Seymour facing one ball, hitting it for a towering six out of the ground and being caught next ball!
Poor Tom A-W got a duck, but at least he came away with something! Will Prenter flashed his bat around and flukily nicked 14 runs before being run out. By the time the 20 overs were up only 103 runs had been scored. LC knew that more were needed even though Belhaven’s bowling attack is pretty good.
The academy’s batsmen knew a thing or two and their stroke-making made our bowling look ordinary. Our fielding was tight and not many runs were given away. Leo Seymour bowled the best ball of the day - a yorker that took the middle stump of their No. 2. Leo was back in the action later on by catching the only other batsmen to be given out, but it all boiled down to the batsmen being quite capable of seeing off any deliveries Belhaven could muster.
Academy only needed 15 overs to score the required runs and it was all over before tea! Everyone seemed to enjoy the afternoon - so that’s all right then! Here’s to 2nd XI cricket - you can’t beat it. (Edinburgh Academy did! Ed)
