Would the team be able to make a come-back after their rather serious defeat at the hands of Academy four days ago? You bet!
Unfortunately Loretto only fielded 10 players and LC didn’t even notice - he doesn’t normally count the players on the field and this time was found wanting!
Archie showing his favourite shot and giving Loretto a catching practice session!
However, Belhaven batted first and it became apparent that the bowling was not going to trouble the openers a great deal. But in the 4th over Ali Johnston played all round a straight ball and had to make the long walk back with only 1 run to his name. Eventually this fine batsman will make some runs - but he’d better hurry as the season is rushing by!
The typical expression of a 2nd XI batsman who has discovered he's next to face the fastest bowler on the circuit
Archie Rettie and Andrew Watson stuttered their way through the next 11 overs. Hesitant at first the shots that were made were untimed, early and, had the fielding side been more confident, the catches put up would have been pounced on. As it was, both batsmen got away with murder and they put on 66 runs before Archie was bowled by a rank long-hop going at about 5 miles per hour. Oh dearie, dearie me!
Leo marched to the wicket and began slashing wildly about. The occasional straight stroke was made but mostly the swipes made contact and he ended up with 25 runs. Andrew made 65 and the score at the end of 20 overs had risen to 143. In all honesty it was a bit stodgy and painfully slow. If only LC had had his brain in gear he would have retired batsmen in order to get a few fresh players to the crease. It won’t happen again!

A most warming cup of coffee was thrust into LC’s cold hands by Mr Johnston - no hard feelings then that his son had been out for a low score again! The breeze that had been blowing across the field had a sharp nip to it and the hot cup was very welcome - spectators by the pavilion were nicely sheltered and able to soak up the rays pouring from a cloudless sky. (Is this going anywhere or can we move on? Ed)
It took 12 overs to get through the 9 batsmen that had remained to face the onslaught from the Belhaven bowlers. All bar one player had an over or two, and no doubt the poor player who lost out would have had a bowl had more overs been necessary. As it was only 16 runs came off the bat and X.T. Ras was the highest scorer with 14.

The bowling was tight apart from a couple of bowlers, who shall remain nameless but you can find them in the stats (That’s a bit cruel. Should I spike this last? Ed), who went a bit awry and gave Charlie Riley a bit of diving exercise. In the end it was a bit of a no contest but we will take the win!
Obviously the match had our fielders on the alert as one of them was overheard saying, as he gathered the ball close to the bowling end and threw it in, “Who’s bowling?” That’s what I like - fielders who know what’s going on.
Well done all - after the weekend break it will be bats to the fore as we engage Riley House next Wednesday.
