Under Elevens enjoy day
in the sun at Tillside
The under elevens travelled to Etal on Wednesday afternoon to take on Tillside as guests of the club and Lord and Lady Joicey.
With a jovial atmosphere and a beautiful, warm and sunny afternoon the scene was set for a real feast of cricket.
The under elevens won the toss (again) and decided to bat first. Freddy Younger began brightly, steering and nurdling the Tillside bowling gently around, and becoming more and more assured at the crease. Jamie Farr impressed, getting himself in and capitalising on his good start before he retired on 30.
As the innings unfolded Constantin de Rosen hit some good shots, particularly on the leg side while Ross Donaldson hit
the ball hard and often to ensure that we reached a more than respectable score in our twenty five overs.
The Tillside openers suffered an early setback when George Watson took a wicket in his first over, but the two boys left at the crease were looking confident and stylish. One retired, reaching 30 not out, but we knew that the wicket of the other was vital. Christian Thomson, who has bowled consistently well over the past few weeks, snared him with a ball that did a bit off the seam, and from then on we restricted Tillside’s run rate well. By the time they were nine wickets down, and the opening batsman could return, the run rate required was up to nine and a half an over, and Jamie Farr was able to polish off the innings with some straight full bowling.
The post-match barbecue, laid on by Lord and Lady Joicey was, as ever, a thoroughly enjoyable experience for all – and many thanks are due to them for their excellent hospitality, which rounded off a delightful day.
