Belhaven vs. Loretto U-11b Cricket.

The last match of the U-11bs’ season was a highly enjoyable and entertaining one. On a scorching day, Freddie lost the toss and we were put into bat first. The last words I said to the boys as they prepared to go out were that at all costs, they ‘must not to give away their wicket cheaply’.

These words were not heeded, however, and within two overs Jamie, Alexander and Freddie had all departed due to nothing more than straight balls on stumps. The boys were out trying to play shots which should have been defended, which is something all of the boys need to learn from. Alistair Prenter stuck around for five but good, straight bowling took him and Tom Brooke after six overs. Sebastian was run out by Tom before he departed the crease which was a shame as I had mentioned our not getting a single run-out all season just before the game.

Relief came in the form of Donald MacDonald and Rex Benson who stayed in for eight overs together. Few runs were scored but staying in and protecting their wicket was the key. They were retired, only to make reappearance later in the match. Sam and Yvan came in and were run out due to poor decision-making again by them and their partners and Theo was bowled cleanly. Donald and Rex returned and Rex played some brave, nice shots to top score with seven, before he was caught at silly mid-on to bring Belhaven’s innings to an end.

With a target on 54, Loretto started well and within four overs had raced to 31. Wickets began to fall, however, and thanks to a couple of catches and some good bowling, suddenly the wind got into Belhaven’s sails. Each of the opening five bowlers took at least one wicket and the fielding side looked like they were really enjoying themselves. The captain Freddie Woodd was marshalling his troops well and Rex Benson really got into his stride, as he began to bowl through the crease with power and accuracy from the Brewery End.

Alexander took a catch and Jamie and Seb also had their chances to, plus a run-out was missed which could have curtailed the Loretto innings but they made their way onto 136 quite comfortably. Alexander and Rex continued to bowl beautifully and each took a maiden, leaving Rex with figures of 4 for 14.

In the end it wasn’t close but it was a superbly enjoyable match, with the boys bowling as well as they have this season and being well disciplined and organised. The boys showed the improvement they have made this year, bowling accurately and have much to be pleased about from their efforts this term. Well done everybody.
