Come Dine with the Headmaster 1

Saturday 9th September 2011

Come dine with the Headmaster got off to a flying start this Saturday. It has to be said that the standard of cuisine was incredibly high and the rest of the Form 1’s are going to have to step up to the mark in order to compete with this group! Not only was the food delicious but the kitchen was kept in immaculate order which was no mean feat with six chefs vying for space and utensils and meant I didn’t having to stay up late to sort out the debris! Well done indeed to Angus Robison, Matilda Laird, Freddie Woodd, Emilia White, Izzy Baillie and Hughie Brooks who treated us to the following menu:

Prosciutto, mozzarella and fig salad
Pan-fried sirloin steak with red wine sauce, olive oil mash and selection of vegetables
Key lime pie with fresh berries and ice-cream

Need I say more?

It started off on Friday night with a visit to the MacAskills’ house to look at some recipe book and choose our dishes .We split into pairs-Izzy and Hughie on starters, Tilda and Angus on mains and Emilia and Freddie on pudding. Decisions made, shopping lists were written and off we went to bed full of expectation for the following day!

Saturday kicked off at 5pm with a trip to Asda in the mini-bus and then back to the house with Mrs MacAskill to get organised, well, organised chaos really! Soon we were all hard at work, peeling, chopping, measuring and whipping until at last everything was prepared and we could have a clear-up. It was all going so well until Mrs MacAskill noticed smoke coming from the pan of potatoes put on to boil-Angus had forgotten the water! Great start to our cooking!

Eventually it was time to eat. Izzy and Hughie’s mozzarella and prosciutto salad went down well and then we gobbled down Tilda’s and Angus’ sirloin steak with red wine sauce and pureed potato. Angus kept saying he couldn’t believe he was eating steak at school and Mr macAskill assured him it would be the only time! By this time we were completely full but when Emilia and Freddie served their key-lime pie, no-one could resist and we all decided we should put it on the school menu!

We retired to the sofas to watch the X-factor interspersed with cleaning up during the advert breaks but all too soon it was 10 o’clock and time to go back to our dorms. Altogether it was a very successful night and great fun was had by all. We can’t wait to do it again!
