Tree-planting - four years on
Four years ago, this year's Form 1 started to grow some trees from seed when they were but wee slips of things to a grasshopper. We took a packet containing beech, birch and pine seeds and planted them in soil and Mr. Curry made the promise that in four years' time, when they were in Form One, they'd be big enough to plant out as saplings (the seeds, that is).
Well, on Sunday, that time came and Matilda Laird, Isabella Baillie, Emilia White and Cassia Roberts were very glad to help out. the trees are still not huge, but are ready to go around the grounds in spaces where light can get through. The trees were staked out and the idea is that they replace some of the trees which have been lost in recent years through wind and age.
Who knows, in thirty years maybe Izzy, Tilda, Emilia and Cassie will bring their children back to Belhaven and show them the tree which they once planted. We hope to get some plaques made up in wood in D.T. with the girls' names on for posterity.
Here are some pictures from the afternoon - well done on being so keen, girls!

The group of intrepid tree-planters.

Matilda and Emilia size the hole up.

One of our specimens.

Izzy giving me the evil eye, for some reason.

Cassie and Izzy pressing the tree in.

And working together on a tough bit of earth.

Cassie finds this one a biy weighty.

Matilda doing the dirty work ...

... and again, this time with Izzy ...

... and again ...

... come on girls, did Matilda do everything?

Emilia jumping on the spade for extra force.

She got pushed over as she did so, most of the time, as above.

Matilda doing the same.

See you in thirty years!

Well done girls, you're a good bunch. |
