Girls b's Hockey vs Mary Erskine

Belhaven 1 Mary Erskine 6

The girls faced a tough challenge against a much bigger school and to their credit they tried very hard. With our trio of Bibi, Flossie and Silvie up front, Ruby and Alice in the mid field, Alex and Nicole at the back, and playing her first game in goal, Susannah. Miranda subbed at both the back and midfield and Jasmine spent some time in the forwards.
The girls started well, they played in a much better formation than I have seen in training; the forwards keeping out wide and the backs achieving their target of sending balls out to the wings rather than straight back up the centre.
We went down by one goal in the first half then a well deserved interception by Ruby, and a powerful drive up the centre resulted in her scoring our only goal of the match.
Meanwhile at the back the defence were playing the game of their lives – they had a lot to do and they worked very hard to clear the ball out of our circle. Their tackling showed a distinct improvement and their clearances were much more effective. There is a lot more work to be done; they need to work on their positions on the pitch to avoid muddling and make sure that they tackle the opposition earlier so that they don’t have easy shots on goal.
Susannah was fantastic in goal and was picked out by the opposition coach as the man of the match for her superb saves. She showed that she had a good eye for the ball and kept the score into single figures!
In the midfield Ruby ran her socks off, she was up and down the pitch like a demon. Alice put in some vicious tackles and Miranda did the best marking in our team. The midfield were very energetic but need to make sure that they don’t just run after the ball but consider where the opposition are on the pitch as well.
The forwards didn’t see much of the ball at the front but worked hard to support the team in defence. We did get the ball into the opposition half but tiredness meant that the girls struggled to get up to support each other.
In a tough match the girls did well and tried to put some of the skills we have been developing into practice.

Well done girls for never giving in.
