Physical Education

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit." Aristotle

At Belhaven Hill the Physical Education programme is designed to complement the Games programme, and to offer varied experiences in other activities. The school believes that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is vital and unique in its contribution to a pupil’s physical and emotional development and health.

The physical education curriculum aims to provide for pupils’ increasing self-confidence through an ability to manage themselves successfully in a variety of situations. A balance of individual, team, co-operative and competitive activities aims to cater for individual pupil’s needs and abilities. The scheme of work is based on progressive learning objectives which, combined with varied and flexible teaching styles, endeavour to provide appropriate, stimulating, challenging and enjoyable learning situations for all pupils.

The Games programme is taught daily in the afternoon and fixtures against other schools are provided weekly in these sports. The focus as part of our Health and Wellbeing is on fitness and a healthy lifestyle, skill development, working as a team, learning to improve on individual targets and the skill to build in team development targets.

The Physical Education programme is designed to do two main things. Pupils are taught the value of an active lifestyle whilst gaining knowledge of, and understanding in, the specific activities being covered. Emphasis is placed upon warming up and cooling down in each lesson. Pupils are also encouraged to adapt and alter games in an inventive section of the programme. This enhances understanding and awareness of their fellow pupils’ abilities. Performance improvement goes hand in hand with regular and committed participation which is very common in this popular alternative to the rigors of classroom study.

Belhaven Hill has the luxury of a heated outdoor swimming pool, Sports Hall and extensive playing fields. The location of the school next to John Muir Country Park provides superb cross country and orienteering opportunities. Winterfield golf club is also a popular destination for our seniors who need only walk out of the school’s back gate to be on the course.

From the youngest to the oldest pupils, PE is a popular subject and contributes to a very positive and active approach to life throughout the school day.
