Physical Education
"Enthusiasum is everything" - Pele'
At Belhaven Hill the physical education programme provides experiences in all six areas of activity. These areas are athletics, dance, games, gymnastics, outdoor adventure, and swimming. Major games are taught daily in the afternoon and fixtures against other schools are provided weekly in these sports.
The P.E. programme is designed to do two main things. To complement the games programme (e.g. unihoc during the hockey term), and to offer varied experiences in other activities. Pupils are taught the value of an active lifestyle whilst gaining knowledge of and understanding in the specific activities being covered. Emphasis is placed upon warming up and cooling down in each lesson. Pupils are also encouraged to adapt and alter games in an inventive section of the programme. This enhances understanding and awareness of their fellow pupils’ abilities. Performance improvement goes hand in hand with regular and committed participation which is very common in this popular alternative to the rigors of classroom study.
Belhaven Hill has the luxury of a heated outdoor swimming pool and extensive playing fields. The location of the school next to John Muir Country Park provides superb cross country and orienteering opportunities. Winterfield golf club is also a popular destination for our seniors who need only walk out of the school’s back gate to arrive at the course.
From the youngest to the oldest pupils, P.E. is a popular subject and contributes to a very positive and active approach to life throughout the school day.
