3p enjoy colour, whizzes and bangs at loretto
3p visited the science department at Loretto for a fun filled morning of activities. They began by watching a chemistry demonstration by the Loretto staff which included many colour changing reactions, a few loud bangs, watching volcanoes, making gases and burning a poor green jelly baby. They then split into three groups and tried out the various tasks set for them – balloon power in the physics lab, using their senses to test a range of liquids in the biology lab and making slime in the chemistry lab. They all thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the morning finished off with a rocket launch by the chapel at Loretto.
Here are some of their thoughts from the morning:
We saw lots of explosions – my favourite was when they mixed fairly liquid in the water and pumped in some gas to make the bubbles. They then set it alight!
My favourite part was when they sprayed some Calcium onto the Bunsen burner and it made the flame turn purple.
We launched a rocket at the end of the morning which was cool – it went so high and then a parachute came out.
The teacher got a liquid and captured the air from the fizz into a test tube. She put a rubber bung on it and then put a glowing splint in – it made a very loud high pitched pop!
We got some orange powder in a bowl and lit it. It started to make lots of orange sparks and made some black powder which came spilling over the side of the bowl.
We started in the chemistry lab and saw some massive fires, colour changing chemicals, gases and bubbles being made. My favourite was the big fire!
In the chemistry lab we saw lots of explosions and they were very bright and loud. In the biology lab we had to find out which animal stole the biscuits but using our senses to solve the puzzles.
First we watched some chemistry experiments. We saw things that changed colour and explode and also set things on fire. At the end of the morning we launched a rocket – it went so high we couldn’t see it – then a parachute came down.
We watched some experiments first of all and then we did a biology activity where we had to use all our senses to solve a puzzle. We made some sticky slime in the chemistry lab. It was really exciting.
We saw some explosions and fires turning multicoloured and then we made some bouncy balls. We finally launched a mini rocket but it went so high, I don’t know where it landed!
I was really excited when we got there as we played with some fire in chemistry and watched the flames turn different colours, and watch something glow. We then made some bouncy balls.
