form 3 visit the
john muir birthplace
This year as part of their science, Form 3 will be completing the John Muir Explorer Award. The same group of children completed the Discovery Award when they were in Form 5 and based their award studying the trees within the school grounds. This time, they will venture further affield and base their work at John Muir Country Park, looking at the plants and wildlife there, whilst conserving the area, by completing litter picks during the two terms.
To start off their work, we visited the John Muir Birthplace in Dunbar to find out a little more about who John Muir was and what he did. The children explored the three floors of John Muir’s Birthplace and found out various facts about his life and his work.
Here are a few things they found out:
John Muir liked to make funny noises to scare his friends
He used to eat raw eggs before running to stop getting a stitch
He was caught in a storm at the top of a mountain and danced the Highland Fling all night to keep warm
He lost the sight in one eye when a machine belt snapped ‘My right eye is gone …. Closed forever on God’s beauty’
He went camping with Theodore Roosevelt
He was able to read by the age of 3 – he learnt by reading the shop signs
He went on a 1000 mile walk
He was born in 1838 in Dunbar
He died in 1914 on Christmas Eve
