Boys' Rugby: 1st Team v Fettes
Date: Wednesday 27th November
Belhaven started this game with intent and intensity. Spending the first 5 minutes deep in the Fettes half Belhaven started the scoring with a well-worked backs play from a scrum. Switching play to the left hand side Tommy drew multiple players before feeding Theo who dived over the line to open the scoring. Tommy converted. Fettes came back into the game and after 12 minutes they broke down the left side just evading the cover tackles. Belhaven went back up the pitch and from a penalty, Wilfred tapped, gave to Harry, who passed on to Charles who drove into the opposition, then giving the ball back to Harry who himself drove over the line. The game, played on a big pitch, went to-and-fro with both teams tackling well, particularly Thomas covering well at the back for Belhaven. Next came a moment of inspiration with Tommy chipping over the defence and Theo latching on to the bouncing ball, fending off the full back and out-sprinting him to the line. Tommy again converted.
Half time score: Fettes 4 - 11 Belhaven
Full of positivity, Belhaven knew they had given themselves a great chance of an away victory but Fettes immediately came back into the game with a try within three minutes. Belhaven and Fettes continued to attack well but Fettes managed to execute two breaks from their fly-half resulting in long distance tries taking them ahead in the fixture for the first time. With six minutes remaining Belhaven still had belief and trailing by three knew they could still win the fixture. Going through multiple phases and retaining possession well they won a penalty. Kicking to the corner Wilfred ran across the defensive line giving a switch pass to Harry. Harry drove for the line but in the action of trying to place the ball it was lost and bobbled into touch. A cruel end to a great performance.
Final score: Fettes 14 - 11 Belhaven
Another very tight loss for this team but a performance all should be proud of. The togetherness of this team is becoming more and more impressive and a number of players are now expressing themselves with confidence.
Man of the match: For getting two tries and tackling extremely well, Theo wins man of the match.
