Boys' Rugby: 1st v Loretto
Date: Saturday, 6th November 2019
On a cold and wet day Belhaven turned up looking to continue their upward trend in performance this season and provide a strong challenge for Loretto. A previous meeting between the two sides in Loretto’s own sevens tournament had resulted in an 8-7 game and this one looked likely to be a close one too. From the off Belhaven put pressure on the Loretto line but were not able to convert their pressure. The breakdowns in this game were a highly contested affair and from one particular turnover Loretto were able to score a breakaway try down the right hand side. They quite quickly had a second try in the first half but the Belhaven team recognised they had relative parity in the game and were not willing to give up.
Half time score: Loretto 8 - 0 Belhaven
Within five minutes of the restart Loretto scored a third try converting all three of their chances well. Belhaven continued to attack well but some knock-ons and turnovers proved costly in the search for a try. Eventually it did come with Theo working his way in on the left-hand side from inside the 22. While both teams pressed for further scores it was to prove elusive.
Final score: Loretto 12 - 4 Belhaven Hill
While this game was extremely competitive the Belhaven team will be disappointed in the application of their skills and good decision making. There was certainly no want for effort though. This will not go down as the best game for Belhaven this season but I think we will see the team bounce back this weekend at Ardvreck.
Man of the match: Winning jointly this week, Thomas for his kick returns and Charles for his carrying in heavy traffic.
