Boys' Rugby: U11 v Merchiston

Superb Belhaven effort too good for Merchiston.

Today saw a strong Belhaven side comfortably dispatch Merchiston Castle.  The first half was comfortable for the hosts as Pedro and Hugo, twice each and James with one, all went over to take us into the break 5-1 up.  Pedro was having great success in getting around the side and Hugo’s quick feet saw him shimmy his way through a posse of flat-footed opposition defenders, left with nothing more than air in their flailing arms.  James’ try was a piece of individual ability and opportunism as he saw a gap and sped through it to create his own score.

The second half was an even affair, with Hugo, twice again and James getting on the scoresheet, Hugo’s fourth and our final try being the pick of the bunch as he caught a forty-yard up-and-under cleanly in full-back position before racing back through the lines, dodging past five Merchiston players and just dotting down in time under a hail of tackles.  Superb.

We still need to work on passing and catching under pressure when moving forward as we gave away too many knock-ons, plus we could pass slightly earlier in contact to avoid taking the ball down into a ruck situation but all in all today’s was a satisfying performance.

Man of the Match:  Hugo, comfortably, especially for his fantastic catch and run.

Final score:  Belhaven Hill U11a 8 - 3 Merchiston Castle U11a
