2nd Girls' Hockey Season Report

Season Report

The 2021 2nd Team enjoyed a successful and, in many ways, memorable season.

With a senior girls’ cohort of twenty-seven, places in the second team were at a premium though through our rotational policy (while taking application into account as well), every single girl who didn’t play for the 1st team played at least two matches for the seconds (or thirds). In all, nineteen girls saw action for the mighty 2nds this term across seven matches.

The season got off to a very early start with a match against Strathallan Prep. on the first weekend back. Though under-prepared, the girls showed great enthusiasm in this exciting game, sealing the win in the final minute and showing much promise for the season ahead.

Loretto was next up just a few days later and the girls put them to the sword. I was pleased to see that they were already making improvements on their previous performance and it was also good to see players such as Willow showing real drive and a hunger for goals up front; Alice taking control of the midfield along with Izzy.

After these two early matches, there was the disappointment of two cancelled fixtures with the school being decimated by the dreaded covid but we managed to get in one more fixture before half term, travelling south to play Mowden Hall, who proved just too strong for us.

After half term, things were looking up again with an early match against Ardvreck which saw us return to winning ways. At this point it was brilliant to see some of our new pupils making their own mark: Alma developing into an impressive defender, Victoire starting to play a core role in midfield, Carmen showing no small measure of determination and Victoria and Paloma never lacking energy. All the while home-grown stock such as Emelia and Ishbell were also making good progress, developing into a solid pairing in defence.

After an earlier cancellation, we eventually came up against Cargi and they proved to be too strong for us. This game was a real test of the girls’ grit and they were not found wanting, working hard, never giving up and earning a number of shots at goal.

A re-arranged match with Fettes was a thrilling affair where, once again, the girls showed some true grit. 0 – 3 down at half time, they could have let their heads drop, but they didn’t. Not only that, but they played some attractive hockey and Olivia found her role – as a goal-scorer, coming ever so close to equalising. We also discovered a new talent in goal – Ottie, as Louisa moved into a midfield role and soon began making her mark there.

The team finished off the season with another match v Loretto, winning this one comfortably and putting everything they had learned over the season together to use the wide channels and play some excellent passing hockey.

This has been my first year of coaching with the senior girls and it really has been a delight coaching this group of enthusiastic, fun, determined young ladies. They have come on tremendously, grown as people and players and there is a very strong core who will be returning next year, ready to make their mark in the 1st Team.  This really has been a successful season.
