Electrifying event! The Oundle & Imperial College STEM Roadshow comes to Belhaven

On Friday 3rd May, Forms 3-5 and pupils from West Barns Primary were treated to an electrifying afternoon with a special visit from Scott Marley of Imperial College, London, partners of Oundle in the brilliant outreach programme that introduces STEM topics to children around the UK. Scott brought his STEM Roadshow to Belhaven, showcasing a variety of scientific experiments centred around electricity.

The one-hour presentation was packed with fascinating demonstrations, capturing the attention and imagination of the young audience throughout. One of the highlights was the Van de Graaff generator, which left the students in awe as they witnessed static electricity in action.

Scott also demonstrated how fire can be a conductor of electricity, illustrating the surprising ways in which energy can flow through different materials. But perhaps the most engaging part of the session was when Scott introduced coding to create a visual representation of a competition between two students. The pupils rotated a generator, aiming to produce the most amount of energy, all while seeing their progress displayed in real-time on a screen.

The interactive nature of the talk allowed the children to actively participate, and they didn't hold back with their curiosity. At the end of the presentation, they posed some impressive questions to Scott, showing their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn more about the world of science.

The STEM Roadshow was not only educational but also served as a source of inspiration for the young minds at the talk. It encouraged them to think creatively and critically about the world around them, sparking an interest in the wonders of science and technology.

Events like these play a crucial role in nurturing the next generation of scientists and innovators, and Belhaven is grateful to Scott Marley and Imperial College London for providing such an enriching experience for our students.
