Undies rack up a big score at Loretto

Belhaven Hill's U11As won well at Loretto Nippers on Wednesday and showed the sort of organised, fluid and disciplined play that has characterised this season.

Offloading out of the tackle, passing into space and focussed aggression at the breakdown meant made the Undies too hot to handle for a determined and able Loretto side.

We lined up with Thomas Dewar and Tom Leckie either side of Will Barlow and ahead of Captain Campbell Mack and livewire lock Jonty Fraser. Freddie Jack fed flyhalf Joe Townshend who marshalled centres Rob McCorquodale, Archie de la Hey and wings Freddie Stuart and William Gale. Alexander Morrison waited for his chance to make his A Team debut from the bench.

The match passed back with Thomas Dewar making a monstrous carry up the middle of the pitch. The ball was worked right through Freddie Jack, Joe Townshend and Archie de la Hey. When the ball finally went to ground Captain Mack and Tom Leckie were on hand to win the ruck and send the ball spinning left through Rob, Jonty and Freddie Jack to William who scooted through to dot down wide and left.

This play set the pattern for the half with the Undies' complete domination of the breakdown winning quick ball in attack and turnover after turnover in defence. The aggression in contact meant that the boys in blue utterly bossed this crucial area of play.

When they had the ball they kept it and when they didn't they won it back within three phases.

Freddie Jack scored with a mazy run before top passing from Rob and Archie put Freddie Stuart through for a brace wide and right. Captain Mack finished a sweeping move before Archie and Thomas "Moses" Dewar parted the red defence to round out the half with a beast of a run.

Half Time Score: Belhaven Hill U11A 7 - 0 Loretto Nippers U11A

At half-time a call went out to the B team for some fresh recruits and Wilfred Tomlyn joined the fray in place of veteran half back Freddie Jack. He was superb.

The Form 4 bossed his hulking forwards and chopped down the bigger Loretto boys with wild abandon. With Alexander Morrison rampaging in the forwards and Freddie Stuart putting on a show out wide the team did not miss a beat despite having three A Team debutants on the field simultaneously. Players were shifted into odd positions and still performed impeccably.

Tries came for Rob, Jonty, William , Thomas and Captain Mack before William completed his hat-trick with the final play of the game - outstanding.

This was a fantastic display by the Undies dampened only by a really unfortunate injury to Rob (thumb). However, it was fantastic to see the resilience and resolve of a group of boys willing to do anything in any position to get the job done.

This is the mark of a true team and I am sure that Rob will want to continue to be involved in some capacity when he returns.

We all wish him a speedy recovery!

Final Score: Belhaven Hill U11A 13 - 0 Loretto U11A

Man of the match: William Gale; Quietly went about his business with utter ruthlessness. Tackled like a steamhammer and showed good hands, step and gas to score three super tries.

Coach's Notes: When the excitement levels build and the intensity ratchets up do not allow yourself to be sucked in in defence. Hold the line and trust your mates to make the tackles when the ball comes to them. Every boy can tackle and you can trust them to do a good job just as they trust you.
