1st XI v Ardvreck

Today saw the 1st team play their final regular fixture of the season (Dads certainly count as irregular!) and it was against Ardvreck, at Hellhole Hallhill.
I’d exhorted the boys to put on a good display of teamwork and passing but the first half was a little lackluster. There were some good phases of play but we tended to drive up the middle time and time again and some of the passing was a little insipid. Despite this, we were only a couple of minutes into the game when Harry had a chance from the edge of the circle which was saved, spent some time bobbling about the circle before Sholto (?) collected it and finished it off to put us one up.

We’ve been working on driving wide with the ball and then feeding it back in and a few opportunities to do this were spurned. We did, however, dominate much of the half and paid a number of visits to their circle. Harry had a few chances as right wing and Lochie and Sholto pressed through the middle to earn themselves a few more shots at goal. One of these beat the ‘keeper, and was goalbound before it was stopped by a defender’s food on the line. Penalty stroke. The first one of the season and Sholto made sure of it to take us two goals up.
I was pleased with our style of play and application in the second half as we used the space to a greater extent, switched the ball from one side to the other and passed with more intent. There were some good phases of play between Sam and Robbie while Ben showed the confidence to drive hard with the ball.

Jonty subbed on and did a good job at the back with Charlie whenever Ardvreck pressed forward. I also changed our structure slightly, doing away with a defender and adding a striker. For the final few minutes, Josh took on a striker role which demanded a slight change of approach.
At some point in the half Sholto found himself in a position to use the flick he has been practising all season and that took us to three nil which was how it ended.
Overall a good performance with some excellent phases of play and a fine result.
Most of this group now go on to the IAPS finals where we will certainly be put through our paces. No matter how we do there, this has been a good season and this group of boys has proved that they have the drive, commitment and skills to hold their own against anyone.
