U11 Netball v Fettes

Belhaven 4, Fettes 15

Our match this week was against Fettes, whom we had played before at the Ardvreck netball tournament. Sadly, today was another match where illness and injury meant that we had two girls missing. However, Florrie and Daisy joined the girls and they both worked their socks off and had a super game.

Sophie (Captain) won the toss and we had the first centre pass. We started very strongly and got the ball straight down to the ‘D’. Our passing was quick and accurate and the girls played brilliantly. After missing a few attempts at goal, Fettes fought back and scored two goals. At quarter time, I felt very proud of the girls and I knew that it was going to be a close and exciting game.
The second quarter had plenty of promising parts but we kept passing the ball to Fettes. When we got the ball we were moving so fast that we either penalised for footwork or threw the ball away. Fettes had strong defenders, which made it difficult for our shooters to get free. Florrie was having a cracking game and was always moving and getting into a space. Alice, Florrie and Daisy worked hard in defence and supported each other well on free passes. The Fettes' shooters were good and very tall, which made it harder for us to stop the goals going in. We continued to fight back and Lilly had a super shot at goal bringing the score to 6-1 at half time.

We had a good chat and we knew that we needed to make our passes more accurate. There were a number of high, loopy passes that were unfortunately intercepted. This often resulted in a goal for Fettes. This was our weakest quarter but we had one amazing moment of play where we went straight from a centre pass to Flora, back to Sophie then to Lilly and she scored a fabulous goal. That was the kind of netball I know the girls can play! The score at the end of this quarter was 12-2.

The girls started off the final quarter feeling a little defeated but they began to pick up in the last few minutes. Honor and Lilly were moving better in the ‘D’ and they had a number of shots at goal. Honor scored first followed by a third super goal from Lilly. The girls battled on and defended beautifully, however, in the end, Fettes were just too good! The final score was 15-4. There were a number of excellent parts to the match and some areas to work on before our final game. Well done, girls!
