Boys Rugby U11a v St Marys

Boys' Rugby: U11a v St. Mary's

Belhaven  10 - 6  St Mary’s

With not a breath of wind on this mild November day, the conditions for rugby were perfect. The Belhaven boys started with a flurry of tries with some fantastic individual runs from Alfie and Hector. The bursts of pace from all the boys were impressive and I’d be surprised if there were a quicker team than us on the circuit.

Eck, Rollo and Charlie are difficult to catch when they have the ball in space and proved a nuisance for the St Mary’s defense throughout the afternoon. Wilf and Tommy’s direct and powerful runs also added an extra dimension to the attacks. However, it was the organisation of the team across the pitch that pleased me most about this victory. This is something that we have been working on in recent weeks and it was pleasing to see a real improvement in this facet of their game.

St Mary’s created some good passages of play and offloaded the ball beautifully in the tackle, leading to some good team tries. But, like with the previous game against Cargilfield, the opposition certainly had to work for those tries. They did not break the line easily and if they did, Archie Smyly would almost certainly have tracked back to catch them. His defense in particular stood out for me today – I have no idea how many tackles he made, but I’d estimate it in the thousands.

A really solid performance and a thoroughly deserved win. We’re already looking forward to the trip to Craigclowan next Wednesday.

Tries: Eck, Archie S (2) Hector (2) and Alfie (5)
