Girls' Cricket

U12A

Today I was taking the girls under 12 A team for the first time and I really enjoyed myself. The sun was shining down in the Dingly Dell pitch by the shrub at Belhaven but this can be deceiving as it was in fact quite cold down at that end of the school. I chose Iris to be my captain for the day and she won the toss and chose to bowl first.

My opening bowlers were Isobel W and Rose C, both of whom bowled superbly with Isobel taking 2 wickets and Rose only going for 4 off 6.

Next up were Bee D-H and Bea H; again some solid bbowling from these girls and Bee also took a wicket.

Anastasia and Sophia up next - a tricky few overs for these girls. I said to them the reason sometimes people make a lot of runs from their bowling is because their bowling is so good, it is easy for them to hit! They are doing some great bowling and I can’t wait to see what they will do with hard ball.

Our second to last pair was Bella and Iris. Bella taking 2 wickets and Iris taking 1.

Despite the wind down at our end of the pitch the girls really did bowl very well with very few wides and no balls; I was impressed.

Our last bowling pair were Emily and Molly. These girls came in with a bang; Emily taking a wicket on her first ball.

This left Loretto's total score on 28 after 20 overs. In Kwik-cricket a wicket is -5 runs and with our girls taking a total of 7 wickets this robbed Loretto of 35 runs. Some fantastic fielding out there today with great energy and encouragement throughout, which is lovely to see. I really like when I can focus on umpiring as the girls are helping each other and guiding each other throughout the match; it really does make a difference.

Onto the second innings, and we were to bat. First pair were Emily and Rose making 11 runs for their 2 overs, an unlucky runout for Emily taking away 5.

Next were Bee D-H and Anastasia making 18 again with one unlucky wicket, some fantastic fielding from Loretto saw quite an outstanding catch here.

Iris and Isobel making 15 some really great shots here.

Second to last were Bella and Sophia making 14 through some great boundary balls.

Last to the crease were Bea H and Molly. Molly had a brilliant 2 overs with lots of boundary balls. With all these amazing shots our total score was 59 which was a good win to finish of a great day.

A big well done also to Bee, Loretto selected her to be the player of the match and I completely and utterly agree. I can’t stress how much fun I had this afternoon with all these lovely girls. It really does make a difference in a match when everyone is giving it their all, encouraging their friends and are respectful and polite to staff. Well done today girls I am so proud of the way you were so courteous with our opponents and how much fun you looked like you were having out there.

Hope we can do it again soon!

1st Girls’ Cricket v Loretto
Belhaven 164-2
Loretto 43-9

Taking a little time out from their exams, the girls were excited about their final match of the season. Several of the team were playing hardball cricket for the first time and were a little nervous about stepping up their game to play for the 1st team.

Loretto won the toss and put us into bat first, with Eloise and Ottilie leading the innings. Some steady play from both girls, not taking the risk for single runs to early, along with some 4s saw the score gradually increase. Both playing well, Eloise was unfortunately bowled out in the fifth over and was replaced by Maggie. Maggie and Ottilie had a great partnership too, scoring more 4s before they called a really risky run for Ottilie to be run out in the tenth over. India came in and paired with Maggie and, between them, added to the score with each ball. As we went into the final over, some more well-placed hits from both girls saw the innings end having scored 164-2 and Maggie scoring 52 runs. It was just a shame that the other girls did not manage to bat today.

As we took to the field, Eloise opened with a really good over only giving away 1 run. Ottilie followed just giving away 3 runs. Maggie bowled a maiden over and as Florence took over the fourth over, she bowled out their batter on her first ball and then didn’t give away any further runs. And so it continued as Clemmie took over bowling. Three great balls before taking 2 wickets, one from bowling out the batter and the next some quick thinking from Maggie, aiming at the stumps.

India was next to bowl, giving away just 3 runs, before Eloise took over again. Lily had a good bowling over, keeping up her great bowling from every match just to give away 6 runs. Up next were two newcomers to hardball cricket, both very nervous about bowling. They need not have worried though as Adriana took a wicket as a result of some good fielding to run out a player, whilst Lourdes followed on bowling out a player on her second ball.

Loretto had a couple of good batters that kept Adriana and Abi ready on the boundary. Ottilie returned to bowl and had a clean over with another wicket, great reactions from Isla as wicket keeper this time going for the stumps. Another wicket for Ottilie in the penultimate over bowled out their eighth batter. Clemmie was selected to bowl the last over and did so with calm determination, bowling out another player on the second ball.

A great all-round performance today with everyone in the field making sure they were ready for catches and any balls running towards the boundary. Special congratulations to Maggie for being the first girl to score a ‘50’, to Clemmie for her 3 wickets and Ottilie for being voted ‘player of the match’. The whole team were congratulated by the Loretto coach for their batting and great bowling.

A great way to end the season.

Final Game of the Season – A Sunny Success!

Belhaven 106
Loretto 50

With the sun shining down and spirits high, the Belhaven Under 12 Girls B team took to the field for their final game of the season against Loretto. Excitement filled the air as the girls prepared to give it their all - and they certainly did not disappoint.

Belhaven won the toss and chose to field first. It was a fantastic start, with Maria opening the bowling and delivering a superb wicket maiden to set the tone for the innings. The energy and teamwork in the field were outstanding, with Calantha, Augustine and Sienna making sure they were backing each other up and stopping Loretto from getting easy ones. A special mention goes to Sienna, who had an outstanding performance, taking four wickets and holding onto a brilliant catch that lifted the team even further.

Loretto battled well but were restricted to a total of 59 runs, thanks to consistent pressure from Belhaven’s bowlers and sharp fielding throughout the innings.

In response, Belhaven took to batting with confidence and determination. Their practising of big hitting paid off in style, with Maria, Sienna, Leonie, Lara, Clara, and Sylvia all smashing boundaries. The highlight of the innings came from Sienna and Leonie, who dominated their two overs and added an incredible 32 runs between them.
By the end of the innings, Belhaven had racked up an impressive 106 runs, securing a solid win in their final game of the season.

It was a brilliant team effort and a fantastic way to end the season on a high. Well done to all the girls. What a way to finish!

Girls’ U10 B Cricket vs Loretto
a bit of a windy wipe-out

It was a blustery afternoon as we marched on to the Millfield pitches at Loretto and you know what they say about windy days and children...

It wasn’t a promising start as Belhaven lost the toss. Loretto decided to bat first and our captain, Delphine opened the bowling for Belhaven. Delphine and Annabelle did a good job of listening to the advice given at the beginning to be as accurate as possible with their bowling so as to not give away too many wide balls to the opposition.

The great bowling continued with Cecily opening her over with a wicket. However, it went rapidly downhill from there on, with Belhaven giving away over 24 runs with wide balls. Flora G managed to take one more wicket off Loretto, though Loretto walked away from the first innings with a total of 34 runs; 24 of which they hadn’t had to work for!

And then it was Belhaven’s turn to bat. Again, it wasn’t Belhaven’s finest hour as Loretto managed to secure a wicket on the second ball of the 1st over. Some excellent paired running between Cecily and Petra managed to bring Belhaven’s measly score of –1 up to 14 by the end of the 4th over but this good work was unfortunately undone by some over-confident calls between Jemima and Flora who gave away three wickets in their 2 overs. Holly and Dulcie made a valiant effort to bring the score back up in the last two overs which meant the result wasn’t as bad as it could have been.

Overall, it was a match that emphasised the importance of listening to each other and working together as a pair. If you don’t run when your partner calls, it’s likely you will be run out! Also, some more bowling practise would benefit the game a lot and keep things moving.

Result: Match lost by 14 runs.

POTM:
I want to mention Holly H's excellent bowling and Petra and Dulcie’s bravery for making good calls that earned runs but were still sensible.

Boys' Cricket

1st

It was lovely to be able to select all of the Form 1 boys for this fixture against Loretto, our penultimate match of the term. On a bright but windy afternoon, the boys played the game in great spirits against a much weaker opposition.

Batting first, Hector and Charlie opened confidently. Hector got us going with two early boundaries before being trapped LBW for 19. Charlie batted fluently for 32 retired not out, timing the ball well and keeping the scoreboard ticking.

Rollo anchored the innings superbly, reaching 50 retired not out, and showing real control at the crease. Hamish added 10 not out, running well between the wickets, while Ollie T and Jack chipped in at the end with valuable runs to take us to a strong total of 150 for 2 from 15 overs.

In the field, Arthur bowled with accuracy and picked up both a wicket and a smart run-out. Noah opened up from the top end and kept things tight. Ollie T had another good outing with the ball, taking a wicket in his two tidy overs. Jack also grabbed a wicket and bowled with good rhythm. Hamish had a go at bowling leg spin and was rewarded with a wicket, while Hector tested himself with a short burst of pace bowling and also picked up a wicket.

Felix, Thomas, Wilson, and Kit all had a chance with the ball, and each played their part, bowling with good intent and showing improvement. Everyone was involved in the field procucing a good fielding performance and support throughout, which helped keep Loretto to 74 for 5 from their 15 overs.

It was a solid, team-focused performance with every player contributing, and a good way to round off the final home game of the term.

Final Score:

Belhaven 150–2 (15 overs)
Loretto 74–5 (15 overs)
Belhaven won by 76 runs
Player of the Match: Rollo – 50 retired not out

Monty edges U10a team to victory in 27-wicket bonanza

Today’s match saw a rare all-boys fixture as we played away in the wind to Loretto. The match was quite bonkers, with an incredible 27 wickets falling in just 32 overs in total.

Loretto scored only 39 runs and even this looked like a lofty total after half of their 16 overs, as they had posted only 5 runs on the board, due to insane, risky running between the stumps causing ten wickets to fall. They did steady the ship, however, and found their range as the match went on. There was good pressure, bowling and generally effective fielding from Belhaven. There were a couple of missed catches but on the whole, we were happy with our first innings effort.

First innings: Loretto 39 runs for 15 wickets off 16 overs.

Confident of an easy run to the target, in response we got off to an awful start, our opening pair of Jules and Louis losing 5 wickets between them through loose play, especially hitting the ball high for catching opportunities. Lochie R. and Archie brought us back into contention, through 10 runs each and 20 wide/no-ball runs taking us up to 30 runs, before Brixton and Lochie O. returned us to peril as they also lost 5 wickets between them, essentially through trying to slog the straight ball and getting clean-bowled.

In times of need, however, everyone needs a Monty and cometh the hour, cometh the boy. Between him and Harvey they put on 31 runs, taking us through to win by ten runs in a crazily productive last over of 22 runs. Monty was switched on and forced the quick singles as well as connecting willow on leather beautifully. And thus ended a crazy match in which 27 (twenty-seven) wickets fell in just 32 overs.

Second innings: Belhaven Hill 49 for 12 wickets off 16 overs.

Stats:

Wickets: Archie (2), Louis, Brixton, Monty, Lochie R.
Catches: Lochie O., Harvey.
Run-outs: Jules (2), Brixton, Monty, Louis.
Stumpings: -
Runs: Monty (13), Archie, Lochie R. (10), Harvey (7), Jules (6), Brixton (5), Louis (2), Lochie O. (1).

Man of the Match: Monty.
Result: Belhaven U10a win by 10 runs.
