Appointment of Head

We seek an inspirational leader to take over as Head of Scotland’s premier boarding prep school, to start in September 2020.

Belhaven Hill is special. Known simply as ‘Belhaven’, its small size allows for a warm, fun environment in which children achieve outstanding results academically and in a host of other areas. The candidate we seek will bring imagination, innovation, humour and a commitment to excellence.

Belhaven is a happy and thriving co-educational prep school, with a unique atmosphere and ethos. It has a roll of around 125 pupils, aged between 7 and 13. Currently, the school is full, with a roll of 124 pupils (7 of whom come from families living abroad), comprising 62 girls and 62 boys. Founded in 1923 as a boys’ boarding school, it has been genuinely co-ed since 1995. Over the last ten years, while other schools in the north have closed or reduced their boarding to weekly or flexi-boarding provision, Belhaven has grown in size and strength and remains a ‘full-boarding’ school, which welcomes day pupils. Almost all the children board for the last two to three years at the school. At present, 80 of the pupils are boarders on a fortnightly cycle, where they go home every two weeks from Friday lunchtime/afternoon until Sunday evening or Monday morning.

Belhaven has a strong academic record and an enviable reputation for its pastoral care. Heads at public schools say they can recognise our children instantly – a ‘Belhaven DNA’ which makes for charming all-rounders, who fit in and contribute to school life. The handsome, listed building is set in 20 acres of beautiful grounds, close to the sea, some thirty miles east of Edinburgh. There is an attractive and spacious house for the Head on site.

The school is a charitable trust run by a Board of Governors. The Head reports to the Governors and attends meetings of the full Board and its sub-committees. As Belhaven approaches its Centenary in 2023, the School has begun to implement a new Strategic Plan, drawn up in partnership with the Head and supported by the staff. This includes some exciting and innovative projects to which it is hoped the new Head will contribute.
