Boys Rugby 1st v Merchiston

Boys' Rugby: 1st v Merchiston

Belhaven's 1st Rugby team confident to play attacking rugby for a memorable victory in last match of the season

Well, what a match this was. While Belhaven had an unexpected late switch of venue, they arrived at Merchiston ready to play one of the top prep teams in the country. It was sunny but cold and pretty good conditions to play running rugby and this is what the crowd were treated to. Belhaven opened the scoring with James racing up the touch line to score in the corner. Merchiston then hit back with two tries of their own, holding on to possession well in the face of some good Belhaven defence. Belhaven retook the lead though with Luis finishing of a fine move from Belhaven. The score after 10 minutes was 8 - 7. Pedro then scored a great break from George for, in my opinion, the try of the day to extend Belhaven’s lead. But yet again Merchiston ran well and went over for their own score before half time.

Half time score: Belhaven 12 - 11 Merchiston

The second half started as the first half ended with free flowing rugby. James went in for a solo score to open the scoring for the half.

Belhaven 16 - 11 Merchiston

Merchiston then replied with their own well worked try.

Belhaven 16 - 14 Merchiston

James completed his hat-trick with another score in the corner.

Belhaven 20 - 14 Merchiston

Merchiston retained possession and again went over the keep to scores close.

Belhaven 20 - 17 Merchiston

It now looked as if Merchiston was attacking with potency and made a break up the wing, only to be turned over. Ted took the ball and fended his way to the line in the corner.

Belhaven 24 - 17 Merchiston

It was starting to feel like Belhaven had done enough and opened a winning gap, but Merchiston was not in the mood to give up lightly and scored again.

Belhaven 24 - 21 Merchiston

Duncan then powered his way over, slamming the ball down for a big score.

Belhaven 27 - 21 Merchiston

Unbelievably, Merchiston scythed through the middle and converted the try.

Belhaven 2 7 - 25 Merchiston

The match entered its final moments and Belhaven had possession. They need only to keep possession and the match would be over. However, they attacked. Merchiston worked furiously to win back possession. Instead, Belhaven opened up an opportunity out wide and after good handling by James and George, Pedro grabbed his second try and finished the match.

Final score: Belhaven 30 – 25 Merchiston

Players of the match: Luis, George, and Pedro for their attack but mostly their relentless defence.

Coach’s thoughts: This was the culmination of a lot of work from the players. The determination to go to Merchiston and continue to keep the scoreboard moving was great. Most pleasing was the control and confidence to attack in the last play rather than try to defend their lead. All players should be proud.
