Boys' Rugby: U13 Ardvreck 7s

1st rugby team at the Ardvreck sevens

Just eight days after their last visit to Ardvreck, Belhaven returned for the 25th Ardvreck sevens tournament. Rightly confident after three wins from three matches this season, Belhaven made a strong start against Ardvreck 2s comfortably running out winners 26-0 in the first match. Next up was Cargilfield, who posed a much sterner test. After a back and forward exchange between the teams, Cargilfield chalked up the win by 16-8. This was a learning experience for the players and one they would utilise later in the day.

After lunch came, Loretto. A game so littered with handling errors there were 10 scrums in the first half (each half only lasting 6 minutes). However, Belhaven collected themselves and ran out clear winners 20-0. St Mary’s were the last opposition in the group stage and Belhaven needed to win this one to secure a semi-final spot. Pleasingly, this was the best performance so far both in defence and attack with Belhaven winning 20-4.

Into the semi-finals now, Belhaven would face the winners of the other group who were Fettes. Straight away Fettes took an early lead but Belhaven kept calm and knew their game plan. Taking the intensity up another notch Belhaven were relentless in defence and attack scoring four unanswered tries to win 16-3 to reach the final.

Cargilfield awaited in what was a rematch of the group game. Belhaven scored early, only to be pegged back by Cargilfield. Belhaven scored again to extend their lead, but Cargilfield came back with two scores of their own. Taking no backward steps Belhaven again retook the lead. In the last few hectic minutes of the game Cargilfield asserted pressure and managed to dive over in the last play of the game to sneak the win. Belhaven can consider themselves unlucky to have conceded the late try as their performance in the final was outstanding. Peaking just at the right time the boys gave 100% and worked tremendously hard for each other throughout the game.

Group stage results:

Belhaven 26 - 0 Ardreck 2s
Belhaven 8 – 16 Cargilfield
Belhaven 20 – 0 Loretto
Belhaven 20 – 4 St Marys

Semi-final:

Final:
