Breaking Records with Awards
More Scholarship News, Bebras & Belhaven Awards
This has been a record-breaking term at Belhaven. Fourteen Scholarship or Exhibition awards have been made in this first term of the academic year to eight members of Form 1 – a remarkable testament to the potential of this year group but also a reflection of a process that seems to be starting earlier and earlier!
Sporting assessments traditionally take place this term and the success of our pupils is a great reflection not only of their ability but also of their attitude towards future development, a key area of focus for the Advanced Sport sessions run by Mr. Townshend and Mr. Dryburgh.
We are delighted to announce that the following fourteen awards have already been made to members of the Belhaven Form 1:
Lily D – Music Scholarship, St. Mary’s Ascot
Rollo F – Sport Exhibition, Radley
Harry F – Sport Scholarship, Glenalmond; Piping Scholarship, Glenalmond; Sport Headmaster’s Award, Sedbergh
Isla G – Sport Scholarship, Sedbergh
Eloise G-C – Academic Scholarship, Ampleforth; Sport Scholarship, Ampleforth
India H-N – Drama Scholarship, Ampleforth
Hector J – Sport Scholarship, Merchiston; Sport Scholarship, Uppingham; Sport Scholarship, Rugby
Ollie TM – All Round Scholarship, Merchiston; Sport Scholarship, Uppingham
With more assessments at Fettes, Glenalmond, Oundle, Radley, Rugby, Sherborne and Uppingham still to come in the New Year, we are hoping for further validation of the abilities of this year’s Leavers – regardless of whether they achieve the award or not, the process of putting oneself under the microscope of external scrutiny continues to be an incredibly positive one.
Belhaven Award
It has been fantastic to see a real uptick in the number of Belhaven Awards completed this term, with a steady stream of Bronze medal winners and our first Silver medal awards being given out as well. Please do remember that these awards can provide some productive activities at home too, if you need to incentivise any help with the washing-up... Learn more about the Belhaven Award.
Bebras Competition
Three years ago, we entered the Bebras Competition, which challenges pupils’ computational thinking skills. At that point, just three pupils achieved Gold medals for those in the top 10% of this UK-wide competition. This year, we re-entered after four terms of STEM lessons with Miss Watt. Twenty Belhavians achieved Gold medals, with two in Form 2, Lukas and Will, scoring full marks. As we look ahead to the opening of the Makerspace and the exciting possibilities that it holds, it is hugely encouraging to have this foundation upon which to build.
ISEB Pre-Tests
The first graduates of the Belhaven Pre-Prep have now reached Form 3 and have formed the nucleus of the largest year group currently in the School. We have seen a record number of children sitting the ISEB Pre-Test as a result of the strength of the group, and the resulting breadth of senior school options in front of them. It is particularly exciting that all of those entered have been invited to the next stage at their senior schools: this is remarkable, given the high calibre of the competition nationwide – well done to you all!
