Thursday Run Record Attempt

The school’s best fifteen cross-country runners were invited to show their abilities to the rest of the school today, and insodoing try to gain their own personal bests and, if possible, claim the various records on offer in their age groups.

Nearly all pupils gained their P.B., some by as much as a minute over the 3K distance.  Hugo squeaked under the 12 minute-barrier with a run of 11m 55 in the Form 1 boys’ section and Archie S., Harry C., Charlie J. all lowered their times in the Form 3 boys’ section, Archie S. running a particularly impressive 11m 43s.

In Form 4 Rollo, Hector and Charlie all bettered their P.B.s, Rollo running an outstanding 11m 48s over the 3K.  Lily, Rafe, Bertie all came very close to their own best times and ran superbly well too.

I was particularly happy that Henry S. decided to have a go at beating his own personal best.  He desperately wanted to get a time under 14 minutes and got a huge cheer  as he crossed the line in 13m 20.  He is an example to everyone of what running should be about – Henry tries hard every week even though he doesn’t necessarily come first.  His attitude in constantly striving to better himself, however, is that of a winner.  Running is for everyone, regardless of ability.

With regard to the records, however, we were well and truly spoiled.  Wilbur took George C.’s four-year-old Form 5 record with a run of 7m 47s over 2K, clipping 4 seconds off the previous mark.  Alfie B. produced an outstanding run of 11m 23s over 3K in the Form 3 run, to best Harry H.’s mark from three years ago.

The accolade of the day, however, goes to George C. who posted the quickest time in our records over the 3K route and finished in 10m 22s, beating his own P.B. by three seconds and shaving just two seconds off the previous record held by Harry B., set four years ago.  What an incredible achievement, and what a reception the crowd of pupils at the finish gave him – the fastest runner Belhaven has had.
