Fettes Athletics 2025

After half-term and 'Trips Week', a Belhaven squad travelled to Edinburgh for the Fettes College Scottish Prep Schools Athletics Championships. The week preceding the event saw phenomenal weather wherever any Belhaven pupil went across the whole UK, the sun beaming down in ideal conditions for fast running and big jumping.

Now imagine the scene at Fettes with just ten minutes to go before the first event. Mr Dryburgh is standing in horizontal rain as the wind hurls itself at hastily erected gazebos. “Surely they are going to cancel!”, comes the repeated cry...

But cancel they didn’t, and Belhaven pupils from across the top five forms went on to compete in their event with courage and endeavour. Whether they were running in the latest torrential cyclonic downpour, or jumping in sunny respites, the squad members can be proud of their efforts and perhaps even take some valuable lessons from their experience.

It can be very easy to step onto the start line when we know we will win. When we are doing something which is easy for us. The true test always comes when a formidable challenge is laid down and met with a steadfast resolution, “if you want to beat me today, you better be ready to do something special because I am about to give everything I've got.” If not the actual thought of individuals, it was a sentiment writ large on the faces of many of our competitors that day.

In the end Belhaven came away with an impressive set of results. Thank you to all members of staff who coached the variety of events during athletics training this term. It doesn't work without you. Thanks also to the pupils who gave their all. I hope this is just a stepping stone to even greater things.
