Girls' Hockey: U11 IAPS Qualifiers

As we arrived at Fettes, we knew this was going to be a tough afternoon of hockey.  Our first match against Loretto began well and we held them a little with some great defensive play from Daisy and super saves in goal by Liv.  Just before half time Loretto managed to sneak in a goal, despite the Belhaven team driving the ball into their own attacking circle.  Amelia and Wendy tried a shot at goal only to be saved and Loretto finished two goals ahead.  Belhaven 0 – Loretto 2

Our next match was against Cargilfield, who were the eventual winners of the tournament.  We settled into the game well with Iona making some great tackles in defence.  Playing against a much stronger team, the girls found this tough, as they knew they would, and were a little uneasy going in for tackles.  Belhaven 0 – Cargilfield 6

The last match of the pool was against a talented side from Sedbergh.  They were quick off the mark and scored very quickly with a lifted ball into goal.  This worried the team a little and they began to lose confidence quickly.  Wendy bravely took to tackle a girl twice as tall as her, whilst Willow put the pressure on, so they found it difficult to pass at one point.  India tried hard to move the ball up the pitch but each time was met by a strong defence. Belhaven 0 – Sedbergh 10

Knowing we had lost the group matches, we played Ardvreck in the Plate competition.  This started off well, but we were soon down to 6 players as Daisy took a ball to the hand.  The team were exhausted but fought on.  Liv made some super saves yet again, but Ardvreck were just too strong.  Belhaven 0 – Ardvreck 4

So onto the last match of the tournament against Craigclowan.  We played this match with our heads held high and determined to at least score a goal.  Like us, Craigclowan had conceded many goals and not scored in the tournament.  This was a great game to end off the tournament- the girls regained their confidence and the game was even.  Craigclowan scored their first goal and with some super attacking play, the ball was on in our attacking circle and Amelia shot.  The first goal of the day and the team were delighted.  We had everything to play for in the last few minutes but Craigclowan snuck in a second goal just before the end. Belhaven 1 – Craigclowan 2

I must commended the girls on their performance today.  It was tough both physically and emotionally for them and they never gave up.  They certainly showed the Belhaven values today – Be Courageous and Be Courteous.  They played their socks off against some strong teams, holding their heads high at the end of each match.  They played short corners today for the first time, having only learnt what to do in the session on Tuesday.

Well done girls!
