Girls' Rounders: 1st v St. Mary's
The sun shone on Belhaven as we welcomed St Mary’s for the match. Winning the toss, Petronille decided to let Belhaven field first but unfortunately this showed us how good St Mary’s were at hitting the ball. Some evenly bowled balls from Petronille, allowed the opposition to really hit the ball into the deep, making our fielders work extra hard. Georgie made some great catches which saw two of the stronger batters out. Some lack of communication in the field saw the girls make silly fielding errors which in turn let St Mary’s score from our mistakes.
As we went into bat, 13.5 rounders was a tough target and meant we had to place the ball well in the field. Robyn, Louisa, Eliza and Georgie led the way with the batting and some risky runs saw a few of our batters out. Facing a skilled bowler, the girls found it hard to hit the ball, ending the innings with just 4 ½ rounders.
The girls knew they had to field tightly in the second innings to limit the score but unfortunately, this made them even more nervous. A great catch from Georgie and then one from Robyn saw two of their good hitters out, but our basic fielding errors cost us rounders.
It was going to be impossible to catch up the opposition, so the aim was to place the ball well and make their fielders work. Petronille was caught out on her first go and Hester and Grace soon followed. The girls found it difficult to hit the ball and had to limit themselves to half rounders.
Result: Belhaven 10 – St Mary’s 26
This was not the best display of rounders for the team – but gives us plenty to work on.
Things to learn for next time:
Try to vary the type of bowling
Watch how you catch – too many butter fingers today
Communication is key
