Another beautiful sunny day for our match against Cargilfield. This was the U11b’s first official hard ball match of the season and I chose Anastasia to be my captain today as her enthusiasm throughout the season has been unmatched and she is such a joy to have on the team. Cargi won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Anastasia and Fox were my opening batters. Our captain Anastasia batted brilliantly making 3 boundary balls. Another few batters to mention were Lochie R who made 22 off 24 balls, Innes who made 16 all of his runs being boundaries, and a special mention to the dedication and wonderful defensive betting from William Gladstone who made 2 runs but faced 31 balls and ended not out! Quite an impressive stint.
After batting for the whole 20 overs we had made 75 runs and they had taken 8 wickets.
We had a quick pit stop for some match teas between innings to gear up for our bowling. I picked 4 main bowlers who had shown some real skill in training this week and those people were again Anastasia, Lochie, Woody and Jules. We also had 1 over from Fox and William G. They all bowled brilliantly and we had Lochie take 2 wickets and Anastasia take 3! Unfortunately today out fielding wasn’t too hot with Belhaven letting a few too many boundary balls get through the fielders. This meant that our score was chased down quite quickly within almost 9 overs.
All in all I think there were lots of positive things about today's match. I think we had some brilliant proper cricket shots and also some fantastic bowling. Anastasia was my player of the match - well done today!

Next week we will do some important fielding drills with a hard ball to practise in a game setting and that will be our goal next Wednesday. Looking forward to it.
Well done U11B!

Another stunning day for hosting a cricket match at Belhaven. There was enough of a cool breeze coming off the sea to keep everyone cool but the sun was beating down and the skies were blue. Another auspicious start to the U11D team’s second match of the season.
Belhaven won the toss and Flora, our captain, opted to field first. James and his pair Fede opened the bowling. Cargilfield then brought out their stronger batters in the second pair and secured the first 4 of the match. Flora then took over the bowling and wowed the crowd with her pace and line and even got one wicket in her second over. Lara opted to offer her bowling to Flora in favour of some lovely wicket keeping. Grace and Llewyn did a great job to keep their two overs down to a mere 7 runs whilst Andrew stepped up the pace allowing only one run to slip by. Unfortunately, a few wide balls meant that Cargilfield gained quite a lot of runs in the second over. Meme also had some nice pace on her balls whilst Delphine finished off the fielding with a lovely wicket in the last over.
Overall, it was a great fielding effort by Belhaven and the opposition only scored 5 fours.
And so to bat. With great support from the sidelines hopes were high and Belhaven had 58 runs to beat. Meme and Dulcie stepped up to face first. Dulcie was unlucky to be run out by Meme in the second over but managed to score 3 runs. Llewyn and Grace, egged on by the sideline cheering, managed to score three runs followed by a lovely 4 in the last two balls of the second over. But most notably it was Andrew who came to the rescue when things got tight. With only 36 runs by the end of the 4th pair it was uncertain which way the match would go, but Andrew’s amazing trio of sixes ensured Belhaven was in with a fighting chance for the last batting team. It was 54 – 58 by the time Petra and Delphine took up their bats – they just needed 4 runs to bring the score to a draw. Fortunately for Belhaven a few wide balls in the second over secured the win with the final score being 69-58.

I was very impressed to see how much everybody has improved; the bowling is more accurate, and the fielding is slicker. Things to work on are getting the ball to the stumps by throwing (not running) and keeping our eye on the ball when batting. I would encourage braver running as every run counts in Kwick Cricket.
Result: Match won by 11 runs.
POTM: Cecily was nominated player of the match by Cargilfield’s team. Andrew was my player of the match.

Today the mighty U11s hosted Cargilfield for an eagerly anticipated match. This season, Cargi, St. Mary’s and Belhaven are very clearly the leading teams on the U11 circuit and it is these games that really show what a team is made of. Easy victories do little in terms of development and a core element of sport is testing oneself against strong opposition. We knew we needed to perform well today to win and that is exactly how it should be. Game on.
Skipper for the day, Xander, won the toss and invited Cargi to bat. Monty (giving up the gloves to debutant, Fin, who was tidy for the first ten overs) opened the bowling with Leo. Monty mostly bowled well, but Cargi played very positive cricket and with the rock-solid outfield, the ball raced to the boundary. Leo was steady and accurate and this paid off as the batsmen kept chipping balls to Xander at mid-off. In the end, Leo took three good wickets.
Alexander took over from Monty and he struck early. Cargi had held their star batter back, putting him in at six and his wicket was key to this match. Ben joined the attack and bowled a bit short and was punished for it. Then Alexander joined the fray and bowled 3 very good overs, including bowling a good length ball that turned a bit and skittled their key man – cue joyous celebrations. In the end, Alexander took 3 wickets for 24 off his three overs and Xander, taking up the reigns from Ben, bowled and excellent length for two overs.
After 12 overs, Cargi were on 98 for 7 and Belhaven seemed to be firmly in the driving seat... not for long as their final few batsmen rose to the occasion and continued to play very positively. Isobel joined the attack and struggled with her line and length and being punished for doing so. Archie, making his debut, bowled a tidy over and took a wicket in it. Then Leo, Fred and Xander finished up with Xander taking two wickets in his final over to end the Cargi innings and over early and leaving them on 143.
Though there was some good bowling, a few good catches, and one absolute screamer by Monty, possibly the best catch I have seen at U11 level, I was a tad disappointed with the team’s performance in the field – arguably our worst so far this season. There was a slight lack of the sharpness and desire that has characterised our performances thus far which, I felt, cost us about 25 runs meaning that Cargi accrued a very defendable total which required us to score at 7 an over from the outset.
Our discussion at the turn centred on the batters stepping up and taking responsibility while continuing to play positive cricket and to this end I asked who would like to open up for us – Ben and Patrick stepped forward. Ben always plays his shots and picked up a cheeky single off the first ball. Two balls later he was back on strike and lofted a shot to mid-on who held onto it. Not the greatest start but the shot was on and played well – just unfortunate to pick out the player. Patrick was then joined by Xander and the two of them settled in nicely, being obdurate in defence and flamboyant in attack and building a partnership of 49 runs off 44 balls before Pat was bowled.
Xander was joined by Fred who also batted very sensibly, protecting his wicket and fending off their star bowler but taking any runs on offer before he fell on 14. Alexander came in, failed to recognise that what was needed was for him to hold up an end, played a wildly extravagant shot to a straight ball first up and was bowled. And all the while Xander kept adding runs to the total, punishing bad balls and keeping out good ones. His innings contained some lovely shots, including a trio of glorious sixes, but, more importantly, it was a real study of concentration and determination. Towards the end, he was helped by an exciting cameo by Monty and then Isobel for five balls, all of who played important supporting roles while Xander finished off the match on an impressive 77 not out off 60 balls and with one over to spare.
I’d said that we need the batters to step up and they, for the most part, did. It was an exciting match, going down to the final few overs. We were challenged by a good Cargi team and stood up to the challenge, emerging with the most satisfying win of the season thus far.
Result: Match won by 5 wickets.
POTM: Xander. An easy one today: 77 runs off 60 balls, 4 catches and 3 wickets. I must, however, also give a nod to Monty, who was outstanding in the field.

Another glorious afternoon and it was time for a hardball match against Cargilfield. We knew they were going to be a good opposition and opted to field first. Eloise opened the over with some steady bowling, and it wasn’t long into the second over that Ottilie caught out the first batter from a great ball. Three more steady overs from Maggie, Bee and Wendy delivering some nice balls which Cargilfield found easy to hit at times.
Clemmie came into bowl the 6th over and bowled out a batter on her 4th ball. Some more good bowling from India, Florence and Iris followed before Lily took over in the 10th over and, as she has done before, bowled out a batter on the last ball of her over. Three steady overs from Ottilie, Eloise and Bee gave away only 8 runs, whilst Maggie’s second over saw no runs being scored. Clemmie’s 2nd over saw her take another wicket with a great catch from Eloise and our final over of the game saw Lily take 2 further wickets with a great catch from Maggie and a run out by Ottilie. Some great bowling from all the girls but we do need to work on our fielding and stopping the ball, so it doesn’t go for a 4!
After match tea, Eloise and Ottilie started batting, but Eloise unfortunately faced a very good bowler and was bowled out on the 4th ball. Replaced by Maggie, her time batting didn’t last long as she was bowled out on her first ball. India joined Ottilie at the crease and between them Ottilie managed to score some single runs before India was bowled out in the 2nd over.

We were falling quite quickly and although able to hit the ball, struggled to secure some runs. Wendy joined Ottilie next, and the pair batted well for the next few overs before Ottilie was bowled out. Wendy and Lily had a short-lived partnership with Lily scoring a couple of sneaky runs before being bowled out in the 10th over. Wendy battled on at the stumps, joined next by Clemmie, again managing some single runs. Bee came to join Wendy as Clemmie was bowled out and they did very well.

Wendy had a good eye for the ball, scoring some single runs along with several 4s from some great shots before being run out having scored 19 runs. Bee was then joined by Iris for the last 4 overs and the two batters did well with Iris delivering some strong shots to secure some 4s and Bee hitting steadily to add some more single runs. A final 4 on the penultimate ball of the game saw us with a total of 82 runs.

We knew this was going to be a tough match today as Cargilfield are a good side with some very talented bowlers. Before the match next week, we need to focus on tidying up our fielding and backing up players in the field.

Belhaven 325 : Cargilfield 313
On Wednesday afternoon, the 2nd girls cricket team put on a spirited and determined performance against Cargilfield pulling off a well-earned 12 run victory. Throughout the whole match the girls displayed impressive batting talent and flashes of brilliance in the field.
Batting first, the girls made the most of a good pitch and sunny conditions. Opening batters Molly and Beatrix set the tone early, combining patience with aggression as they negotiated the ball. Chloe and Abi then played a classy innings of 20, lacing the ball through cover multiple times and showing excellent shot selection. However, the real acceleration came from Adriana and Lourdes, whose quickfire 28 off the 12 balls injected momentum into the innings. Their confident stroke play, including four boundaries was instrumental in taking our total to an impressive 260 runs.
Defending the target, the girls began strong on the field. Emily struck early with a sharp delivery that uprooted the middle stump in the second over, while Maria kept the pressure on from the other end with tight lines and a consistent length. One of the standout moments in the field came courtesy of Lourdes, whose stunning catch at mid-wicket turned the momentum back in favour of the home team with the 2nd half ending with Cargilfield on a total of 248 runs.
While the first half saw excellent batting from several key players, it was the second half where the Belhaven truly dug deep, once again showing resilience and skill in batting to extend Belhaven's total to 325 runs. Molly and Beatrix played the anchor roles perfectly, keeping the scoreboard ticking with smart singles and good communication between the wickets. While Bella and Leonie provided the biggest boost, playing an aggressive and entertaining innings. As Cargilfield started to bat and began to rebuild and chase down our target, Belhaven remained calm when bowling, along with demonstrating good fielding placements which enabled Emily and Maria to close the match with Belhaven sealing a 12-run victory.

It was a well-deserved win for the 2nd girls, who showed great skill and determination. With continued improvement in communication and backing each other in the field, they look set for a strong season ahead.
Man of the Match: Adriana for her smashing batting skills!

Result: Cargifield won by 40 runs
Weather: Bright but fresh
On a bright but fresh afternoon, Belhaven’s U13B team took to the field to face Cargifield in a keenly contested fixture. Belhaven won the toss and opted to bowl first, hoping to make early inroads into the opposition’s batting line-up.
Cargifield, however, batted with confidence and posted an impressive total of 164. Despite the score, Belhaven had plenty to cheer about in the field. Geordie was outstanding behind the stumps, showing great skill and sharpness with the gloves. Bertie bowled a tidy spell of spin, tying down the batsmen with consistent flight and turn. One of the standout moments came when Aubrey turned the game briefly in Belhaven’s favour with a superb over that saw him claim three wickets; a richly deserved reward for his accuracy and persistence. Pierre also contributed a moment of brilliance with a safe and crucial catch in the deep.
Chasing 165 for victory, Belhaven got off to a steady start thanks to Tristan, who played confidently as an opener and compiled a well-made 16. Pierre, who had already shone in the field, top-scored with a composed 25, anchoring the middle order with style. Towards the latter stages, Juan LS provided a burst of excitement, striking the ball powerfully to all parts of the ground in a late attempt to chase down the target.
Ultimately, Belhaven fell short, finishing on 124, just 40 runs shy of their target. Despite the loss, it was a spirited performance filled with individual highlights and plenty of positives to take forward into future matches.
