Pupil Review: Ardvreck 7s

It was an early rise in the morning and up to Ardvreck we went. It was a long journey, but we got there raring to go. Found our way down to the pitches and started to warm up for the long day ahead. As it started to pour with rain the series of matches began. A win against Cargilfield for both teams: a strong start to the day. Next was Craigclowan for the boys and Strathallan for the girls which really got everyone’s confident levels high. Straight into our next matches which was another win again against Ardvreck and Lathallan. Which finished the boys top of the group and the girls unbeaten so far.

Reconvened under the marquee where we had a quick snack and the boys getting ready for the semi finals against Loretto. Xander running the pitch in the first half scoring 1 try. Hugo cutting in to score the equaliser and converted for the win.

Meanwhile the girls were playing their best match against Cargilfield of the whole game. We started off with the ball which was passed out to Imogen who took advantage. Tearing down the wing making excellent passes and at the end scored a try by taking out the post. Mr Tomlin’s favourite try of the whole day is when we were on touch five at the try line and I ‘grenade bombed’ it to Cecily who giggled as she put it down. The other tries were scored by Sienna and Jimena both down the wings. Whenever they saw an open space they accelerated forward and smashed the ball down on the try line.

The best game for the boys was against Lathallan were the team really came together and worked as a team. First was Xander who was given a pop by Rafe to run half the pitch and scored. Next was Alexander who was given it out wide and ran round the Lathallan defence and scoring in the corner. When the next half came Fred was given the ball and saw the gap and went for it, then scoring under the posts. Then finally was Reuben who ran threw front line and gave a long ball in to me and scored under the posts.

The girls won all of their matches 5 wins and 1 tie leading them to be the winners of the first ever girls Ardvreck sevens tournament.

The boys in a nail biting final against St Mary’s who hadn’t  conceded a single try throughout the whole tournament. It was a really tough match. Although St Mary’s had possession, a lot the boys defended well with Fred running the pitch and fly, hacked it with the perfect bounce that landed on the try line but missed out on a try by inches. But a really good effort from the boys who played really well and ended up in second  to the great joy of the boys.

Overall the atmosphere was great the girls cheering on the boys and vice versa through all the mud and rain the spirits were not dampened.

Everyone played amazingly and the hopes for girls' rugby matches in the future will be well anticipated and the long boys' rugby term ahead will be conjoined by all the girls on the side cheering and supporting them as they make there way through the term!
