U12 Hockey Ewart Cup at Barnard Castle
The girls had eight different opposing teams, all but one school were unknown to us. The tournament was run as a round robin and the turnaround between games was quick, this gave the girls little time for recovery, especially those whose ears were getting chewed by Mr Townshend.
It was a slow start to the tournament, poor positioning and lazy running let the opposition through to shoot. As the games went on the defensive line up got the quick ball going at the 16, putting the opposition under pressure to react and allowing us to manoeuver up field to get some of our own shots on goal. Our midfield started working harder, remembering to react on a turnover and covering more ground. Channelling on the left pushed the opposition attack too wide to create opportunities. Towards the end of the day our defensive set up against 16s, free hits and long corners was far more aggressive and slowed the opposition.
The team that came off the pitch at the end of the last game were more skilled and knowledgeable hockey players than those at the start of the day. The girls responded to feedback, we eager to learn and were a credit to the school.
