Today was an interesting match during which the Belhaven boys were trying to work on their passing, which was key to open running hockey. The boys were aiming to use the width of the pitch to explore the open spaces.
It was a game full of foot and stick errors from both teams and if a whistle was to go for all of these there would not have been a game. With this in mind, the players need to work on holding the stick more firmly and trying to be on the correct side of their stick for more power.
Belhaven scored the first two goals in the first quarter and then a more invigorated Loretto team tried as hard as they could, but the goals did not come for them. The first half goals were from Johnny and the second from Beetle.
Half Time: Belhaven 2 - 0 Loretto
The second half was much of the same where the player would have scored if they had drawn the ball on to their strong stick side.
Johnny opened the scoring in the second half with a powerful reverse stick goal. Then Beetle scored another demon of a goal. Loretto replied by scoring two goals in quick succession. But then Johnny did what he does best and put the ball firmly in the back of the goal. Jamie followed suit with some magic of his own and a firm finish.
This match was positive in so many ways. The flow of the game allowed the boys to experiment and give their close stick work a chance without too much worry of making a mistake.
Well done to Harry, as captain, Charlie, Tom and Harry in goal for working hard and playing well in their positions.
The final score: Belhaven 6 - 4 Loretto
