Boys' Rugby: 1st v Merchiston

The Belhaven team stepped out from the pavilion to a shower of rain indicating this game might well be a tight one in tough conditions. Luckily the rain left pretty quickly and the crowd was treated to an excellent game of flowing rugby. Right from the start Merchiston put pressure on the Belhaven team and forced an intercept try within the first minute. Rather than panic Belhaven played their way into the game with some good attacking width and after some good handling Theo showed pace and strength to go in at the corner. Merchiston showed their attacking ability again though with three more tries before the break despite some excellent tackling by Belhaven. Continuing to show attacking prowess Belhaven again went up the right and Harry sniped round the blind side of the ruck to go in at the corner.

Half time score: Merchiston 15 - 7 Belhaven Hill

The second half got under way much like the first half with good attack and defence from both sides. Belhaven struck first with a try through Harry again. With five points the difference the game looked poised to go either way but Merchiston showed good quality to get their fifth and sixth tries of the day with the last being a great solo chip and chase. Now twelve points adrift the game could have been considered lost but the Belhaven team had other ideas. With only a few minutes to play Belhaven went up the field and scored through Tommy. With only a minute to play Harry made a big break down the right wing beating all covering defenders to go in at the corner. Unfortunately the game had run out of time and this was to be the last play.

Final score: Merchiston 22 - 17 Belhaven Hill

This was another step up in this teams’ development. When having fallen behind the Belhaven players kept coming back into the game and scoring tries. With some stand out tackling as well there was a lot to be happy about in the performance.

Man of the match: For his hat-trick and strong tackling Harry wins man of the match.
